    Hi all,

Haven't had much time over the past few years to play golf with kids coming along etc but want to get back into it now and looking for advice on where to join. Living in Sandyford so play the public course in Stepaside from time to time and would gross +/-95 over most 18 hole courses.

    My criteria are:-

    1. Within 30 mins drive of Sandyford
    2. "Good" course. More interested in the quality and layout of the course than a flash clubhouse.
    3. Reasonable joining fee +/-€5,000 and subs +/- €1,000.

I want to get a GUI handicap so I can play more open days and invitational events.

A friend mentioned Beechpark Golf Club in Rathcoole and another Roundwood Golf Club. Are they the best options out there for me?

    All suggestions appreciated.

BTW, is there any form of golf membership market where members sell on memberships they no longer want? I'm thinking in the current climate there may well be people looking to off load what might have been an impulsive or extravagent and now un used investment when the cash was flying in over the past few years.

    Regards,

    Ben

Two reasonably priced and basic clubs are Dublin Mountain and Dublin City.

I'm a member in South County - copied and pasted the below from another thread. I work in Sandyford myself and live in Terenure. SC is 10mins from either the Tallaght or Firhouse exits of the M50. I lease a membership for 2k a year with no entrance fee and full golfing rights. The only difference is that share holders get a vote at the AGM. There's also a deal on shares now approx 6k I think.

I had a good look round other courses before joining but I love SC I must say.

    Course
7,000 yard+ Par 72 championship course. Bielenburg designed interesting lay out, well kept despite greens being bad earlier in the year they are now much improved and set to improve further over the summer.

    Facilities
Driving range with grass bays. 2 practice greens. Pitching area (50 yards) with practice bunkers. Really nice clubhouse with a nice bar and great food. Proper locker rooms, good showers and all that. Good pro shop and Ramy Burns (ex European Tour player) is good for range and playing lessons.

    Competition Booking
Online timesheets that go up 10 days in advance at 1pm on a Friday. Usually slots available up until a couple of days before the comp. If you want your pick of slots I usually log in on the Monday when I get into work and there's a good choice. Comps are very well attended but the course is rarely too busy to either come up on spec for a comp or slip out for 9 after work. Wednesday is a sem-open singles comp where you can invite guests up for 25 quid to play in the comp. Retired guys play during the day and the working guys play later so it always gets plenty of entrants. This time of year not too hard to get on the sheet with the long evenings.

    General Atmosphere
It's very much a club in the traditional sense. The vast majority of players have at least drink after their round in the clubhouse and watch a bit of golf or football on the tele. Not joining a club where people just change their shoes at their car boot and shoot off straight after their round was a big thing for me. The 2k includes 300e levey which encourages this so people use the bar is always busy. All interclub teams are well managed and there's good competition for places. For beginners and higher h'caps we play in both the Best Cup and Straffan Cup (18-20 h'caps).
There are BBQs and social nights where buses are organised from Dublin suburbs and back as well. Same for the Captains dinner I think.

It's a friendly club and if you're prepared to put your name down on your own or with people you don't know on the timesheet and just gradually get to know people you'll settle right in in no time.

They're the main reasons I joined anyway.

Beech Park is a good course and Zak is a good pro their too. I wouldn't recommend Dublin City (where I spent much of my youth) or Dublin Mountain as they are quite poor courses. Dublin City also lacks a real club element given that it used to be Balinascorney GC but the members were turfed out with no warning/compensation by the owner.
