Colleague hauled over for careless driving?

Hi, A colleague at work was recently pulled over for running a red light (not speeding) and the garda who stopped him was adamant he was going to see him in court- no option of penalty points or a fine. My colleague has a British licence and as he's a field technician and with the new laws, he's terrified of losing. Its his livelihood. He was straight up with the guard and very apologetic as it was a genuine lapse and not something he does regularly. He gave him all the details he requested but so far hasn't heard a thing.

Can anyone advise when he can expect a summons and what might happen to him in court? He's young chap (25), sensible enough, no previous convictions of any kind (not even a parking ticket) and is a bit freaked out.

    Thanks,
    T.

Certainly. There is a useful list in the golden pages under solicitors.

Yes, well thats pretty obvious and he is of course going to get a solicitor should he face a courtroom. Does anyone have anything more concrete? What he might be facing on that day? He's a kid and he's ****ting it. I'm sure this isn't an isolated incident and people have been in similar situations before.

Careless driving: This is defined as 'driving a vehicle in a public place without due care and attention'. The Gardai enforce careless driving offences and this involves a mandatory court appearance. From 4th June 2004, a driver charged and subsequently found guilty of careless driving will receive 5 penalty points on their licence. Drivers may also be fined up to a maximum of 1,500 euro, or given a prison sentence to a maximum of 3 months. (You should note the courts also have discretion to impose both the 1,500 euro fine and the 3 month prison sentence together).
