Recommend me some new monitors?

    Hey guys - noob here,

I've had a studio set up in my attic for over a year now, and one of my Roland DS-30A monitors have this horrible buzz from my niece pressing the speaker "bubble" inwards, which I had to vacuum out.

Anywho - I need some new monitors - preferably available on Thomann.

I have attached a pic of my attic space (before I had it fully set up, hence absence of monitors in pic): the red highlights where I have them at the moment, so considering my available positioning & the fact that they’re sitting on a wooden (pine) desk, what would you recommend?

And in Sound on Sound, I saw some monitors that are elevated on little feet, likely to avoid the sound from the speaker reverberating through a solid surface, like my wooden desk! Are these any good?

    Also - active or passive?

    Thanks! Budget is about €350-€450.

Edit: I just realised you can see my monitors sitting on the top shelf, before they were actually hooked up.

    First off, what's your budget?
Secondly, that monitor placement is too wide.
The monitors should be in an equilateral triangle with, and with the tweeters at the same level as your ears.

    Budget is approx €400.

The placement is too wide? They're approx 1.5 feet away from me, and pointing at my ears. Suggestions?

Just to have them set up in an equilateral triangle with your ears.
There's plenty of reading for you to do.
    Here's a start :

You could get your Rolands fixed. They have a repair centre in Dublin. Call 01- 4294400.

I completely recommend Samson's Rubicons. Have the R6a's myself and find them really nice. Thomann do them for under 400 I think.

ask the tech to replace both drivers and keep the good one as a spare. This way the monitors will be matched. As far as 'feet' go - use blu tack, or my favorite - buy 3 of those solid bouncy balls you see in the toyshop - carefully cut them in half and you have three feet for each speaker. You will run into bass smearing with these - but they steady the boxes well.
Place you nearfields close to you, on their sides, with the tweeters on the inside closest to your ears. In your budget I would recommend: Event, B&W (hifi, I know, but better than many studio monitors), KRK, Fostex. Stay away from Alesis, Tannoy

Beg to differ there. It's more usual for the tweeters to be on the outside. Give a better impression of the stereo image afaik. Remembering that lower frequencies are harder to localize.

acoustically treat your room before you consdier buying ANYTHING

otherwise mix on good phones , and play mixes in the car to check the low end .

your p1ssing against the wind - without treatment , trust me .
