    Hey everyone,
I'm hoping to take up a martial art and have being reading up on the different disciplines. Other than differences in technique do different arts vary in terms of strength training emphasis or conditioning? Would it be possible to join a college class now or would I need to wait til the start of next term? Thanks everyone :).

Hi Yilmaz, welcome to the board.
The NUI, Galway Taekwondo Club trains over the summer and will be happy to accomodate you, www.nuigalwaytkd.com is their site.

I run Point Blank Submission (www.PointBlankGym.com) an MMA gym outside of town, you woul dacquire a hefty increase in strength and condition in working through our beginners course, indeed that's why many of my beginners start. You can give me a call on 087 2037 926 and we can talk about it more or email on info at mmaleague dot com

Thanks for replying Mark. That's great. I was worryed at first that if a group was going strong a newbie would get in their way. I hope to start with the NUIG taekwondo club and see how I get on. Thanks again.

Cheers Lab_Mouse. I hadn't heard of that club but it's interesting to know that Galway certainly has a good range of choice. Thanks.

    You're more than welcome.

With regards to strength/conditioning the more competitive and full contact martial arts should have a higher level of strength and conditioning.

Although while this mightn't appear to be specific strength or conditioning training, it's generally combined in with the rest of the training.

Thanks again Pingu. Are you involved in the NUIG clubs yourself? I suppose I'm just looking to build up a good level of fitness (rather than competition) and self-confidence. I tend to be slightly shy by nature so anything that gets me out meeting people while having a bit of craic at the same time is good. Taekwondo looks very good so hopefully I'll give that a go.

I'm in the Judo club in the college. Judo tends to require and build up fitness fairly quickly.

Beginners are welcome the whole time. The classes come Sept. are generally on Mon & Wed aimed towards beginners, with the Friday class being a more randori (sparring) session.

Most people for the first year or two would only compete in the Varsities, which is generally a craicing weekend away, and there's a few that don't really compete much at all.

There's a few heading off to Helsinki for a training camp in a few weeks. The summer before last we were hosted by a club in Sweden, mental week. So i've found it generally to be a blast - we can be found in the college bar after most training sessions :D

We train in the hall at the same time as TKD though, so unfortunately it's a bit of an either or :( Also our Club website has been (re)hacked so it's out of commision for a while.

But there's others apart from Judo and TKD, your best bet is to give them all a lash, drop into any of the ones that take your fancy and give a few sessions a go. On clubs day in Sept. talk to the people at the stands aswell, will give you an idea of the clubs make up.

If you wanna drop down to us gimme a pm and i'll make sure ppl know your popping down.

    Best of luck with it.
