Declaration of Freedom to Marry

We are getting married in a few months time and are in the process of completing our required paperwork.

Our priest told us that instead of Letters of Freedom, we could get a Declaration of Freedom to Marry (basically the same as an affidavit) to state that neither of us have been married before. He gave us two copies of a template to save us from having to draft one ourselves. At the bottom of it, it has the space for the witness to sign and underneath it, it says 'Commissioner for Oaths'. This puts a bit of a spanner in the works for us as we work full time and neither of us will get to a Commissioner for Oaths during working hours (we commute to Dublin every day). We had thought that a Peace Commissioner could sign it for us and we know there are several in our town that we probably could get hold of at the weekend so that wouldn't be a problem.

So I was just wondering, has anyone out there ever had one of these signed instead of Letters of Freedom and if so, did anyone get it signed by a Peace Commissioner and was it accepted by their priest or does it absolutely have to be a Commissioner for Oaths? Thanks!

might be easier to get a solicitar to sign it or else take a half day off work and get a commissionar to sign it

No, the Letters of Freedom would be enough hassle for both of us. I'm not from the county we now both live in so its obvious to the priest that I'm not a local and hes aware that my fiancé lived away from home (in a different parish) whilst in college so we would have to get a letter each anyway, and thats without lying about the other parishes we lived in!:D It would be handier to just get one form each signed really, I think we probably will just have to take some time off work and go to a solicitor after all.

    Thanks for the help everyone!
