Is it preferable to have watched the mini-series, in advance of starting into season 1, e.g. narrative arc, character development ?
    Thanks

Definitly. Its pretty much essential, as it introduces all the main characters, and explains who/where/why they all are where they are. Plus, its excellent.

As above, it's a must imo.

You will watch it eventually. Might as well do it in sequence.

I have seen a full box set DVD advertised on Amazon.co.uk-does that include the mini series?? It says complete Series!

Yes, that includes the mini series. But I think it's missing The Plan.

    The Plan sucks anyway.

anywhere decent online to watch the mini series?

I have series 1-4, the plan and caprica on the hardrive, only watched 17- of season one so far. It would be nice to see the start...

The opening 25 minutes of the plan are fairly epic IMO.

Also it fills in some gaps (that probably didn't need filling) so it is unquestionably interesting for long time watchers even if you were expecting something else.

I watched the whole thing through without having seen the Mini-Series and I did fine without it. Can't be any harm to watch it though.

I think you really need to in order to put a number of things in context:
    - What Baltar did or didn't do on Caprica

    -Adama and Lee's relationship

    - How they know Doral is a cylon

    - How they know Leoben is a Cylon

    The mini-series is critical.

When you consider how BSG starts off with "33", you wouldn't have a clue what's going on or who anyone is if you'd missed the preceding 3 hours. You'd effectively have missed the first four episodes. Also, the Mini-series is one of the Apexes of the whole show so you'd be crazy to bypass it.

Don't miss Razor either which is absolutely excellent. Ideally watch it between Seasons 2 and 3 but you could enjoy this one just as much afterwards.

There's also another 120 minutes split between two 10-part and one 7-part teaser webisodes called "The Face of the Enemy", "The Resistance" and "Razor Flashbacks" if you were craving more.

Edit: Forgot, don't bother with the plan. They blew the budget in the first 5 minutes and the rest of it views like a series of deleted scenes.

I would disagree with you about "The Plan". The first time I watched it I thought it was rubbish and just flashbacks from the entire series. But I watched it again and found that it does infact make alot of sense of the earlier BSG seasons. Definately worth a watch at least twice imo.
