Sore knee on crosstrainer.

I'm new to the gym (not very fit but hoping to get there) and just got a fitness programme made up for me. For the cardio, I start on the treadmill 10-15 minutes then the rowing machine for 10-15 minutes and on to the crosstrainer for thirty minutes. The problem is, the crosstrainer is hurting my left knee, I end up giving up after a few minutes. I would like to use it because it does give a great workout compared to the threadmill (which I'm not particularly fond of). I was always under the impression that the crosstrainer was less hard on the knees. What could be causing this?
