iMac OSX 10.5.3 and dial-up problems

Got an imac for a mate, he has an account with Eircom for dialup. Trouble is the mac keeps dropping connection every 3-4 mins (regardless of what ISP I try). Now his old Win98 box works fine on the same line. The mac is using an Apple USB modem, I know there were issues with 10.5.2 and PPP, but that seemingly had been resolved. #

Anyone had similar problems or know of anything that might help? Any help appreciated as I'm new to MACland.

ummmm i haven't used dialup in years but I do know that back in the day some modems were more prone to droppage than others.

Is the line a clean line?

thanks for the reply, yeah the line is clean all right. Im gonna see if perhaps the modems are prone to RF noise from the monitor. I had it running at my place and all seemed to be ok, the only difference is that I had the modem on a USB extension lead as my phone line wasn't long enough, meaning it was physically away from the screen. Its the only thing I can think of atm.

what is your mate doing with eircom dial up in this day and age, mobile broadband is everwhere these days.......

Best thing you can do is go down to your local phone shop tomorrow and sign him up to broadband.....go for 3 or 02 depending on where you are....
