Looks like a pretty comfortable neck :pac:

Wrap your thumb over the top Jimi-style and away you go ;)

Hmmm? How's this the worst idea ever? Those Warr guitars are pretty much the same as a Chapman Stick (like so), Trey Gunn from King Crimson uses 'em.

The chapman sticks are designed to be a new instrument. That's 2 guitars bolted together!

Maybe it's not so bad actually, it does have 14 peizo pickups for that authentic acoustic 14 string guitar/bass thing sound :D

That is an amazing clip Karl. Though it looks like the Chapman stick neck is only half the width of the "bass guitar's". Also, is there a body on the Chapman stick ? I doubt if the guitar could be played in that position. Also you 'd need hands like King Kong to stretch across that neck. :D

Warr are pretty much the same kind of instrument as chapman sticks, and it's played the same way, touch style. Not "2 guitars bolted together!" :pac:

Here's a video of someone playing one, you don't need large hands or anything:

And yes, if I thought I'd be able to play one, I'd love to get a Chapman Stick/Warr guitar.

So...... guys !! Looks like Karl is right and we were all wrong. You learn something new every day. ;)

That was another lovely clip. Beautiful tone from the instrument IMO.

So are you all ready ???? All together now......... SORRRRRY KARL. :D

I still think it looks ridiculous. :p

    Rigsby, I laughed. :D

Check out the video on this page, and have a little read of this. Honestly, they're very cool instruments.

...even if they do look ridiculous Dord! :P

    Needs a Bigsby, though.

    .......... but sounds great. ;)

I'm not really concerned about it's looks. FWIW I dont think it looks ridiculous at all.

I'm more concerned/puzzled about it's practical playability. In the second of Karls clips the player is tapping which seems to work fine. It seems to me that this is the only way to play it with a fretboard that wide.

EDIT : Should have read that link first. It answers my question there. :)

    Tappa tappa tappa.

Nah, it neither floats my boat nor rocks my goat. That fella is going to have ****e posture hunched over like that all the time, a hunch ain't rock and roll!

It's threads like this that make me realise just how utterly fickle and insular creatures guitar players can be... In fact, I would've expected more from the Doc, who usually seems open to more outside the box instruments, but now you're picking fault with the instrument because of some guy's posture?

For reference, take a look at Trey Gunn playing a Warr guitar:

How's that posture for you? Is that acceptable for your rock'n'roll uniform?

Honestly, I find some of the attitudes displayed in this thread towards an instrument that differs from the norm just shameful, especially from people who generally advocate moving away from the Fender/Gibson model.

Ahhh lighten up, some of us have a sense of humour, it's not a malicious attack on the fibres of prog rock.

I'm familiar with Warr, you should have a listen to Behold... The Arctopus and maybe see how restricted Mr Gunn's idead of Warr playing is, they're not just for tappa tappa tappa ;)

Either way, that instrument is an awkward way to go about your business and not the best idea someone ever had. The manufacturers insistence on it resembling a guitar, for example, strikes me as stupid. Were this instrument designed to be played on a lap the player could tappa tappa tappa on it using all fingers and thumbs instead of using one thumb to fight neck dive. :D

two words: sh*t tone. in my personal opinion there's a real loss of clarity in that style of playing and the lack of movement in the strings results in a deadened sound, as if playing dirty old ones. they'll never be more than a gimmick. it beats the point of having a stringed instrument. that's why variants like the piano were invented...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but just because an instrument is not "in the tradition " does not mean it's necessarily bad. I admit I was a bit taken aback when I saw it first, but having seen it played in the clip I took a different view. Ok, its not going to be played in a rock band, but I'm sure it has it's musical place like all instruments do.

Doctor J : I suppose you dont have much time for the Indian zither either ?

......... and speaking of posture.... take a look. :D
