I have a somewhat similar question, but the answer might be different.

I recently bought a macbook on holidays, and in the course of travelling around i lost the second installation disc. Does anyone know if it's possible to buy these, because I've heard you can only get them straight from apple and it may take a while...

Is it possible just to use a mate's installation discs from his macbok??

It should be OK, OS discs from apple are universal as regards hardware. So assuming you're installing it on Apple hardware to replace a legit copy you've nothing to worry about :)

You are half-right. The retail boxed OS you can buy in a shop will work on any compatible hardware. The install disks you get when you buy a Mac will only work on that model of Mac.
