One thing, cos im in the same boat as you. The rrp for 40gb was sposed to be 400, but everywhere is selling them for 440.

Also, I may wait til the DS3 is packaged with the console. Since you want a second controller, you could just buy a DS3 seperately (gamesnash or the canadian site) and have the sixaxis as backup.

I don;t think I could bring myself to buying one second hand. I mean you coud get the receipt with it but even then, you suddenly have like 6 monthes or less, the thing could break and you are royally screwed. Had a bad exp buying a ps1 second hand years and years ago.

are you a student? if so go into hmv and get the bundle were you get the ps3 1 controller and a game (from a list) for 420, then add the hdmi lead and a game/ 2nd controller (DS3 out tomorrow) and get your 10% discount and you should get all this for approx 450....and thats the best deal youll find id say!

I would like a look at that game list alright! I bet they are crap.

I bet that the second controller HAS to be either a sixaxis or a third party.

Finally, I am pretty sure you can't use your student card on consoles.

Sorry to sound negative, just putting out there.

Can you get HMV reward points if you buy a PS3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,724 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I have no idea, I can't think of any reason why not though. I generally don;t buy anything in HMV. I find their prices offensive. But when your in a situations where most PS3 consoles have a uniform price. I guess it is undertsandable.

Well if you can, then it would be another few quid saved in terms of the value of the points.

the second controller you buy seperatley, they cant stop you fron buying something, it doesnt come as part of a bundle, the bundle is the console and list game, with all the add ons (controller/extra game & hdmi lead) and student card it comes to approx 450

it doesn not expressly say that anywer so legally they have to, and i will be saying that to the guy tomorrow!

The hmv student card offer does not apply to purchases of electronic gift cards, gift vouchers, e-gift vouchers, event tickets, games bundles, games hardware (all formats), all other non-games electronic hardware (e.g. digital music players), digital downloads and excludes postage and packing where applicable.

I know I have seen it somewhere else to (i.e. not online)

I havent been taking much notice on deals on the ps3 since i bought one but today i think I saw a good deal in HMV Cork.It was a new 40gb PS3, Any Game and Any blu-ray disc for just 430e.Not bad considering that most new games are 65e and most blu-rays are 40e in HMV.I dont know if this is only In Cork or what. Its worth a try, though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,724 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I like that one, any game? If I could get MGS4 and A ps3 for 430 I would be chuffed, regardless of the Blu-Ray

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

It definately said ANY game.Actually, for the first time ever, i was impressed by HMVs prices. They had the special edition of MGS4 for 55e and "I am Legend" on bluray disc cost the same as on DVD(Now that would make me buy more Blu-rays). Please note that i saw all this in HMV Patrick St Cork and i dont know if its everywhere

I'm also in the market for a PS3 for my son. Pardon my ignorance, but whats E3?

My son is waving an old "Game" catalogue under my nose - it says that the 40GB PS3 is not compatible with PS2 games - is this still correct? It also says the 60GB machine is fully compatible with PS2 Games - I'm a bit confused

BTW are Tesco or Dunnes doing any clubcard deals on these - like 25% back or whatever??

It might also be a good isea to wait until you can get a Dualshock3 controller bundled as standard with the ps3.To come to think of it, they may coincide the introduction of DS3's in the ps3 with a price drop??

E3 is like a big games convention where all the major companies show off their latest games and software etc.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo each have their own conference and they usually make one big-ish announcement (price drop, new console, new bundle, release date of big game), you get the idea.

So thats why it is best to hold out. Its very likely that Sony may offer a new low price and start bundling the console with dualshock controllers.

ALSO you are right in saying that the 60gb plays ps2 games while the 40gb does not. Sony took out the feature to cut costs.

Theres bound to be a new, bigger hard drive model around the corner though, which could have more features and be smaller etc. Just to let you know.

Also, you are not going to find a brand new 60gb model brand new anymore and I have reservations about buying this kind of stuff second hand (If you don't then make sure whoever you buy it from has the receipt for you)

I might buy from argos cos they do insurance for 3 years. For a fee of course

    Can you trade in a 360 for a PS3?

I heard awhile back you could trade in a 360 and get a PS3 for 99 euro....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,871 ✭✭✭Conor108

So where are the best deals now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,871 ✭✭✭Conor108

HMV maybe with any game and blu-ray film for €440.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,724 ✭✭✭✭noodler

If you go looking Conor, let me know what you find out. If that HMV deal exists outside of Cork tho it sounds a cracking one.

You could only do this in a few places, to the best of my knowledge, Game and Gamestop are the only major videogame shops that accept consoles for trade in.I think that Gamestop are the best for console trade ins, there awful for games, though, so you should shop around a bit in regard to what certain places will give you.Way more places take games, I think Xtra Vision give the best prices for game trade ins

If you go North you'll get a PS3 Console And Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (PS3) for about €360 with the good exchange rate going at the minute. I'm sure if you shop around up there you might get it for less, plus the games are cheaper, check this site - http://www.zavvi.co.uk/ , they bought the Virgin Shop in Derry and i found a load of good deals in there for games, dvd's and music. (i'm not a rep for the company, just found that they where a lot cheaper than rip off ireland)
If you're changing money over to sterling and your going on a week day don't take money out of the ATM while you're there, bring the euro's with you and find a post office up there, they don't charge commission and you'll get a better rate than your own bank or the shop you buy from plus no transaction fees for using your card (apparently the UK isn't part of the Euro zone so you won't get charged to use an ATM in Helsinki but you will if you use one in Derry)
