New Garden out of control weeds. Help!!

We have just finished our new build and the garden is a complete mess. Firstly when we got all the sewerage done we got the garden harrowed but we didn't have time to pick the stones or put grass seeds down. Now we have a complete jungle for the garden. There is just weeds everywhere. They are now up to our heads in height. So my question is what to do. I know I can't sow a garden now until September but what should I do in the mean time. My brother has a vegetable garden in the back of our garden so I can't spray weed killer as I will kill off his garden.

I will also need help on how to get the garden ready to be sown in September. Should we get it rotovated or harrowed again. Also someone mentioned a stone crusher or something like that so we won't have to pick the stones. Anyone have any experience on DIY garden. We can't afford to get a prefessional in. Sorry about the long post.

I'm in a similar position. We moved in last August and the wild grass/weeds have been growing freely ever since. I'll be importing topsoil at some stage soon hopefully but should I kill off what is currently growing or just level the imported topsoil on top of the existing "garden" ?

Hope you don't think I'm hijacking the thread , I'll be interested in hearing what responses you receive. Is September the next time that a lawn should be sown ? Or can it be done before that ?

    Hey Guys

Yeah it sounds like a big job alright - you need to get the weeds out & if not using a weedkiller it needs to be done by hand. I can help you with that as the best thing to do is to make a mulch to cover the ground thus blocking sunlight to the weeds seeds. Off the top of my head i say it could take 3 days. If you want more advise or you would like my help, please PM me.

    Thanks

This time last year our site was in a similar situation, head high in weeds and grass. Local farmer advised me to leave it till late Aug, he sprayed it and killed off everything. Harrowed it and spread top soil (needed), got a couple of polish lads who stoned it and seeded it. Now we have a lovely lawned area.

you could try cutting the weeds down and solarising the soil - stretch clear plastic across it and weigh it down with stones. better explained here:
