Can’t seem to find any details on when (or if!) these happen? Nothing on Triathlon Ireland site and a quick Google took me to the 2006 championships. Anybody able to shed any light on these?

Basically there could be two national champs in duathlon

Standard distance 10km/40km/5km and sprint distance 5km/20km/2.5km

If a race doesn't come close to these distances then it can't be a championship event.

No clubs are willing to hold a standard distance race - whether this is a reflection of a lack of interest in standard distance racing or what I don't know. The last national duathlon champs held by Piranha in 2006 had very few competitors and the club lost money as far as I know.

With regard sprint distance races - there is demand for the format and the races are held. However for a race to be the national champs the club has to want it to be the national champs. Clubs don't all want this - having a race be a national champs puts extra requirements on the race. Last year no one with a race of the sprint distance wanted the champs. This year some clubs do want the champs and are of the corrent distance - however given that the event is a national event by nature it can't be on a wednesday after work :)

In short - if there are no races that are of the correct distances, that want to be national champs and are held at the weekend then there can be no national champs.
