I've downloaded it and it seems to be working fine.
    Am I in the clear?

Seems like from what I've been reading that this issue has been blown out of proportion by Kotaku.

Have a 60gb myself and no problems. The last update messed up my nat 2 settings but this update didn't affect anything (yet:))

According to the site, if an upgrade were to brick your ps3, sony charge 150$ for repair. I guess that it's only if you're out of warranty, but over here their standard repair fee is 250euro (and it's 150$ in the US).

Surely this would be illegal? I mean, the console will refuse to function online, unless you apply the update. Has anyone here had experience with an update bricking their ps3's? Did sony ask them to pay for a repair?

I see plenty of people saying the 2.4 update worked grand, but it was obviously bad enough for sony to remove it.

Around the Christmas time an update bricked by 60gb but it was still under warranty and replaced foc.

read a little further on that thread and the multitude of others.

If it does fail - take out the hard disk, and format it again on your PC before re-inserting. As always, a good idea to do a backup of your saves, etc., before doing the update.
This appears to work for most ppl affected.
Haven't seen any reports yet of any that have required a return to Sony.

where is the operating system of the ps3 stored and running from??

if you were to re-format your hard drive does it not wipe the OS?

    No,
firmware or OS for PS3 is in flash somewhere - so when you put in a newly formatted FAT32 drive it can recover.

That said - some ppl have linux on there also, so yes, you would lose that :(
