Fascia and soffits

    Hi All,

Hope someone can answer this for me.

    We're building direct labour.

We're at the stage where we'll be putting on fascia and soffits soon, we've had a few guys down to price for us and they have said they need the fascia boards in place first, fair enough, but my question is..who's supposed to put these in place? can anyone tell me if its part of the roofer's job before I get on the phone to him and make a fool out of myself. I don't want to be unsure when I ring him incase he senses this ansd says he didn't include for it but can do it for extra.Trying to keep extras at a minium.

His 'guy' has also given us a price but its €1500 more than the nearest quote so wondering if he's including the price of the boards in this.

    Thanks for any advice.

All the fascias and soffits should be put on by the joiner/roofer.

But as we're going direct labour and have cheaper price for the fascia and soffits, I just want to know if the timber for them are usually done as part of the roof

    Hi,

Sorry to come back to this, and if I come accross as stupid please excuse me,
Meeting the roofer in the morning, well hubby is-there is a mutual feel of hatred between me and the roofer, just curious-has anybody been told that the soffit bords haven't been included in the price? or would this be as rediculous as a tiler putting down tiles and not grouting saying it wasn't included in the initial price? Would like to arm hubby before battle, this man was extreemly nice before we hired him, now we barely have two civil words with each other, are there builders out there that don't include for the price of the soffit board when doing a roof or is it a stupid notion, bear in mind he has installed the facia boards. Sorry again for looking for it in black and white but this man is really difficult to deal with and if he senses we are in any doubt he will use this against us.

It is common enough that the Carpenter (Roofer) does not do the finished fascia or soffit. This is often done after as a seperate contractor who specialise in fascia & soffit. This is generally when PVC fascia and soffit is to be used. Also if your "roofer" is not a qualified carpenter he may not be able to make the neet cuts which are required for finishing work. How ever the roof should be left ready for the fascia and soffit this is done by putting on a timber backing board (fascia) to fix the PVC fascia and gutter to

This situation is more common in larger developments due to speed and effeciencies.

In our neck of the woods the "roofer" will always be responsible for fixing each and every piece of timber associated with the roof. Thats not to say that it isnt done differently in other parts of the country but if it is then it is the exception rather than the rule.

Any standard specification will include this.

Regardless of what finish you are using for the fascia and soffit it is still incumbent on the roofer to leave it finished so as to accept the guttering. Unless it was specifically stated either in writing or orally then the above statement can be taken as correct.

I agree muffler that the carpenter will do all the timberwork but may not do the finished fascia and soffit as seems to be the case above. It must however be left so that the fascia and soffit can be fixed (by installing a backing fascia). No soffit is fixed at this time as this would impede the flow of air through the vents in the pvc soffit.

The gutter cannot be fixed until the finished fascia is in place.

To conclude the backing timbers (fascia) must be done as part of the roofing contract. The fascia and soffit contractors will not of priced for this.
