Can anyone recommend a pro for lessons in leopardstown for a beginner?

Swing and technique that kinda thing :)

do people normally get half hour lessons? and how many, i was thinking of 3 (one a week for next three weeks) and plenty of driving range practice

Do you know any of the pro's names? I don't know any of them off hand. John Langan used to do a bit there but don't think he's a resident. If you post up the names I'm sure a couple of people will know them.

You're probably better off measuring time between lessons in golf rather than weeks. I'd say between your first and second lesson, have 3 trips to the range to work on what you've been shown and 2 rounds to see how it's working before you go back for lesson 2.

Probably double that amount of golf between your second and third lesson.

If you go back too quickly you won't have improved all that much and you'll be getting much the same lesson.

    There is

Michael Kavanagh - he does lessons there, resident in stackstown
    Micheal Allan

    Any experience of either? :)

Does anyone know what your man Barry Power is like as a teaching pro??

He's the fella who's got an add on TV at Drynam Driving Range....

I know a little bit about Michael Allan and have a bit of experience of Barry Power.

I played with Allan a few years ago in the European club. Good golfer himself and I think played in the Irish Open a couple of times. Seems like a nice guy with a solid golfing knowledge.

Power, strictly in my own opinion, doesn't have the same credentials. I know for sure that when he originally began teching in Spawell he did not have the usual 3 year PGA teaching qualification. I've seen him hit balls himself and he doesn't seem up to much.

I don't know anything about Kavanagh.

My own choice of the three would be Allan.

Oh jesus dont say that!lol! I have a lesson with him soon, and said even before I had one that'll I'll commit to three lessons!!! (It works out cheaper!)

The add on TV looked good and his website looked flashy! I’ll pick up something though. Well the range is good!

Thanks for the feedback though, good or bad it’s all worth while.

Ah man, I wouldn't worry about it! He's teaching for ages so he can't be all that bad - especially if you're just starting out. No matter who you go to they're just gonna go through your basics.

Regardless of good, bad or indifferent reputation I wouldn't commit to more than one lesson with a pro before I knew him well. I'm sure you can say "eh, payday is next week so I'll just fix you up for this one and book the next three next time".

Yeah I'd imagine they book for him or at least have a number for you to ring.

I had a lesson with Dave Lavelle in Spawell. Have to say it was very good and he's a fairly nice fella. Michael Kavanagh in Leopardstown is supposed to be good enough as well.

One thing though, dont commit to 3 lessons in 3 weeks. The best thing to do, is have one lesson, and practice what you learn in that lesson for at least 3 weeks. Then go back for another.

I'd recommend Dave Lavelle. Very easy to work with, good humoured and not too technical.

Never heard of him but sure give him a go.

That certainly says a lot about Mick Allan. Fair play to him.

Not a bad tip there for other people looking for lessons. Like buying wine in France - if there's f*ck all left of a particular one on the shelf, it's probably pretty good.

    allen totally booked :P

I've been taking a lesson a week with barry power for the last 2 years. I can easily say he is brilliant,

since I started golf in 2003 iv'e been to countless "pga" professionals on the north and south side of Dublin and I have to say they were not has effective has Barry at curing my hook.

Iv'e noticed over the past year a lot of people have been trying to knock him down because of his sucess.

Barry has been on tv3 ireland am countless times, the Irish times newspaper, golf magazines and radio giving advice to golfers.

Enjoy your lesson at Drynam, might bump into you there! just dont take my regular slot!

    lol!

Played a round with a 2 handicapper who cured my slice and made bunkers easy for me for free. A lesson a week for 2 years , he's holding back

No !! lol, I am not that bad,

He cured my hook on the 1st lesson, I ve been going 1 a week for 2 years now for 2 reasons, (1). lower my handicap and (2). something to do in the afternoon, I work for myself in design.

My hook was stopping me from scoring well and lowering my handicap, we are working on my short game at the moment to see if i can come down another 3 on the ol handicap since my long game is very consistant at the mo, haven't played much with all the crap weather we have been having.. :(

Kevin Foy is excellent. I had 2 lessons with him in May and he has me hitting it a lot better. Keeps it simple as well. e35 for 30 mins if I remember correctly. 0868042899 I saw him in Stepaside twice.

Kevin Foy, Michael Allen and Dave Lavelle are all ex assitant pro's at my club, Foxrock. There all very nice lads. Loads of people in our place go to Michael Allen for their lessons and have never heard a bad word about him, all glowing reports from anybody whos gone. Haven't managed to get around to getting a lesson of him myself yet.

Got a lesson from Kevin Foy and he was very good in my opinion. As Da Golden Goose said he keeps it simple (this is what your doing wrong, and here is what I want you to do) rather than cluttering your head with all this other imagery that many pros seem to use in there lessons (pretend your pulling a rope etc etc)

Have heard many good reports about Dave Lavelle as well. He was a real joker when he was in our place and was very easy to get on with and was well able to hit the ball too.

I am looking to get a lesson on my driving in either Leopardstown or Stepaside.
    Anyone got any recommendations?

John Langan is excellent in my opinion. He operates out of Leopardstown.

Both Michael Allen and Michael Kavanagh in Leopardstown are very good. Did some work with Michael Allen last year which paid off considerably.

There are good golf teachers teachers and those that are less so. You will generally find those that are most well regarded by asking around, as is the case here.
In my opinion, however, making the choice is not just that simple. Once you have the names of the good guys, it becomes about two main issues. Do you want minimum or maximum technical discussion/instruction and how easy what he says is for YOU to understand and implement. The communication and translation is very different between different people and finding that harmony that suits YOU is key to progress. I do know a number of the names suggested here and they are great teachers and very nice guys to boot.

Might be worth a trial lesson with each of your top picks before making the final decision.

    Cheers

    Peter
