Take some time beforehand to reflect on what you've done and acheived since your last one/since starting. What have you enjoyed, what have you found challenging, anything you would have done differently.

Then think about what you would like to achieve in the coming year, any skills you would like to gain/improve and what you will need to do this. Then what you are looking for longer term and how you will achieve this.

    Enjoy :)

Did the contract, letter of offer, job vacancy advert etc have any info on the responsibilities of the job? If so, try and use those.

This is a little buzz-wordy, but still quite useful: http://www.topachievement.com/smart.html
