Policy of paying to the post office and not to the bank

I don't understand why the application for jobseekers allowance includes a part to fill in the bank details for payment and they then tell you that is not possible.

I've heard of others getting it into their bank account, does north cumberland street have a different policy?

I went down for my first payment today and the post office said there was nothing there and to come back tomorrow. Later I got a letter just confirming the amount and I noticed they changed the day of first payment to the next day. What a pain, last minute changing their mind and letting me know too late! That would be less annoying if I didn't have to queue for ages in the post office, after already queuing for ages to sign on.

One upside to this though is I thought I heard somebody lodge money to AIB in the post office? Is this possible? If so, could I do that with the allowance paid right away? (But it would be easier if they just cut out the middle man).

Yeah I have to collect mine at the post office too.
I saw the option on the form but the guy didn't say
it was an option when filling it out.

I too know a guy who gets it straight into his account.

And is your payment always there? I don't want the same thing to happen to me every week.

I just found this link on the website: https://www.welfare.ie/secure/eft.html

Maybe this will give a result

The first six months of benefit is paid into the post office after that you can ask for it to be tranfered into the bank, this is to make sure that people are in the country and not working abroad and coming back once a month to sign on which was happening in some places.
may not be the same in all places though

Every office has different rules to this, some make you always collect it in the post office. It is to combat people signing-on and then going aboard or down the country etc. At least it keeps the post offices busy.

Well I assume it will be there once I continue to sign on.
I just hand them my PPS card, they swipe it and then hand over the dosh.:)

It's actually an interesting and good idea. :)
I'd never heard of this before.

Innovative ideas from the department, well done!

Does the post office give you a cheque or cash?? Can you decide which post office to pick it up from? Due to recent events I am waiting for my claim to be processed and believe I will have to go to the post office also for collection. I'm under the impression it is a cheque though.

    Thanks

Every office has the same rule now - it's the post office for the first 6 months.
