After a long time looking and trying to find a reasonably priced club a around Dublin/Meath/Kildare, I think it is probably not a good time to be paying a large joining fee due to the overall uncertainty of its value.

With this in mind I checked out the usual 'pay per play courses' and the ones that charge an annual sub. Elmgreen and Holystown would be quite close but after playing these, I found them quite bland. I am 9 handicap so was looking for a bit more of a challenge. I had a look at Citywest and the various options available. It seems to be priced ok but has anybody played the courses? Are they any use. Should I be looking at getting membership fo both courses? I might have a round or two if the feedback is good...any comments greatly appreciated

    Hi there,

I recently, only last week actually, received the brochure with the various options. I definetely won't be going for the top option as I don't need the gym membership. Think I'll go for the second option which includes both courses for 1600 (if I remember correctly) with no green fees and your GUI.

I was a member for two years (about 5 years ago), under similar type of scheme. I would definetely recommend joining the both courses.

The Lakes course, think it was called the executive course before, is a par 65 with 8 par 3's. Don't let that judge how easy it is, because when playing off the blues, it's very tricky, especially when the wind gets up as that area is very exposed.
The greens were fantastic when I played on them. Staff were good, there were problems but they were just starting the whole scheme and they were making things better as they went along.

There was always a good turnout for the Saturday competitions, not sure about the Wednesdays as I was always working at the time.

The championship course is nice as well, but I found the small course (which is where they have the most competitions) alot trickier, as said, especially playing from the blues.

I also got a hole in one on the 18th, par 3 over the water on the lakes course in competition :-) so that's obviously my favourite hole :-)

I think I'll be joining again in the next month or so.

    Hope that helps.

was a member there for a while, imo if you think hollystown isn't tough enough for you then you won't like citywest, its only slightly tougher if at all. I found the lakes course a bit of a joke, as noted above 8 par 3s isn't a golf course. You can get around it without a driver or a 3 wood/rescue. It can also be very slow even though short because of all the waiting on the par3s. It is halfway between a par 3 course and a 'proper' course.

The championship course used to be ok but since they changed the front 9 it is also now a short course and certainly not a championship one. The last 4 holes are still ok though.

All in all it's very average now, as long as you know that going in you would be happy but sounds like you need to play both courses a few times to see do you like them.

Do you think Holystown is that easy???? Not talking about the red nine, that is forgiving but the blue 9 is tough enough and challenging to most I would have though. Its definitely a step up from Elmgreen, in toughness, no disrespect to Elmgreen.

I play the lakes course quite a bit with guys in work. I actually think it's really good for what it is. It's in fantastic condition at the moment. Greens are great. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than a short-course. It's interestingly laid out and you have to plot your way around to shoot a good score. Great practice for your wedges as the greens are small and slopey so you need to be accurate.

Two main problems I see is that it's not much of a "club", with no clubhouse or people coming up and playing with whoever's there. Guys seem to join in 2's and 3's and play in the same group. Secondly, they have little or no inter-club teams.

As for the longer course, I always thought it was over priced and over rated. Also seems to lack the club atmosphere. Played them a few years ago in Barton Cup and no one on their team knew each other, no reserves there caddying or any buzz at all really. Could have changed since but I'm not a fan anyway.

I joined a few months back and think it's great for the price you pay...

I had been out for 7 years have been a bit all over the place which is not wise on wither course as quite a bit of water and trees...

The championship is grand espically the back 9 which I love and a great finishing stretch..

I agree about the lack of a "club" feel which I miss but I have started to find a few regular playing partners who are all decent (10 and lower)

Yeah I was really talking more about the Lakes course when I said that. The main course has potential to build something up I'd say. It would just take a few guys with a little bit of time to give to organising - get a friendly Barton or Junior cup match in the early season or something like that...
