Hi all. Well I work in the construction industry in an engineering firm in Limerick. Due to slowdown at work few of us have been told we are gonna be workin a 3 day week instead of the current five for next few months. Only outta college a year so gonna stick it out and continue to gain experience before I prob will have to head to Oz or London for a bit.
Anyways my salary is €32,500 about €625 a week gross and I take home approx €540 a week. Does anyone know what I’ll be earning for just working the 3 days now. Also am I entitled to any social welfare for the two days I don’t work. How much would this be as I am living at home anyway.
    Thanks in advance.

I dont think thats how social welfare works. I would imagine that your 3 days pay would bring you over the line of eligibility.

You could look for a second part time job.

Or if I was you I would do a part time masters. That way your upskilling and working. Perfect :)

Was thinking id be earning around the €300 mark and would be not entitled to social welfare bit some people have told me id still be entitled to some social welfare.
Also as it is different days off each week I will struggle to get part-time work but might try bar work the odd night if I could get it.
Not going to do the masters as again id be off different days a week. Also its 3 day week for next few months and if things don’t improve I’ll be let go and I’ll prob hit the lights of London then where I should be ok for a job as I’ll have a years experience etc behind me.

The English economy isnt much better than the irish economy at the moment. But at least the cost of renting over their is going down.

Yes but plenty of work in London for a civil/structural design engineer at the moment as iv a few friends over there and say work is readily available for ppl with 1+years experience. Also short flight home to Shannon. Whats the situation in Dublin for Civil Engineers. Most my classmates workin in London at the moment and earning good salaries so not familiar with Dublin.

Well im in IT myself but my sister is a town planner. She got let go from her company in Galway. She got a job in Dublin quite quickly though.

Any company envolved in construction doesnt seem willing to offer any sort of long term contract. She has a 1 year contract in Dublin. It was at the end of a 1 year contract that she left Galway.

I lived in london and one thing I suggest is try and get somewhere close enough to work that you dont have to get the tube every morning. It costs a good bit and its a pain in the arse.

    Cheers for that tip!!
Yeah to be honest even a 1yr contract would suit me cos gonna go travelling anyway sometime soon. Just buildin up experience for when the economy ever picks up!!

I'd hazard and guess and say that you'll get a pro rata share of your current salary ie 3/5 or €19,500.

This just about equals 40 hours a week at the minimum wage. If you contact the Social Welfare, they'll tell you if you're entitled to anything.
