A friend of mine is organising a Texas Hold Em tournament to raise money for the Zimbabwean branch of Serve (serve.ie).

It's on this Sat 5th July @8PM in the Bank Casino on Fr Matthew Street (off South Mall).

    Game details:
    No Limit Texas Hold'em
50EUR buy in, 25EUR buy backs (number to be confirmed) and a 25EUR top up

Prizes (to be finalised). The prizes aren't huge because we're trying to maximise on the take to go to the charity.
    1st place - 500
    2nd place - 250
    3rd place - 150
    4th place - 100

If you'd to attend (or would just like more info) please email charitypokerevent@gmail.com

Oh, and please spread the word! Thank you!

best of luck with this. Prizepool is abit low TBH and I think your best chance of gettings players to this are one's that know or are related to the person you are fundraising for. Just speaking from my experience in running these sort of fundraising events in the past.

Next time, why not try a €30 buyin, with unlimited €10 rebuys for the first 90 mins(3 levels at 30 mins a level) with an additional top/up at the end of the rebuy phase.

And only take 30% of the total prizepool for the fundraiser. Have it well stated on all adverts etc and that way people will know exactly what they're playing for.

Going by your above structure for this game a €50 entry plus a few €25 rebuys could potentially have someone spend €200 and therefore he/she would have to win or at least come 2nd place to make a profit. Not a great +EV for poker players.

its just my 2 cents mate and poker fundraisers are always difficult to get crowds with(down here anyways) due to alot of money being withheld.

Thanks Carlo, I wasn't involved in the organisation or structuring myself, but I think there was lot of to-ing and fro-ing and hair pulling trying to settle on best option :)

It's a tricky one, because obviously the main aim is to raise the money for charity, but it still has to be poker!

Obviously apart from the costs associated with the Casino itself all the money will go to to the charity.

Thanks for the feedback, will pass onto the organiser as well.

    Hi there,
When we help with a charity fundraiser, we make it clear to the charity that a max of 20% is taken from the prize pool and advertised as that. Anyone we have done has got decent crowds because we advised the charity to print tickets for it and sell them pre event. There are other ways for charities to make money off the event without expecting poker players to fund everything, as in getting each of the tables sponsored so that instead of a player being sitting on table 1 seat 1 he's on table AIB seat 1 etc etc, and the charity can look for an overall tourney sponsor.

If a charity game is run and 30-40% is taken out of the prizepool, that'll be the end of charity games in that area as poker players wont put up with that.

    Good luck with it

Thanks Connie, also good tips for the future.

I realise it may not be for everyone, but so far the response has been positive, so I'm hoping that people will see this as a fun way to give money to charity and have a good evening out...
