Just hoping to pick the brains of any of you who have been before. Going shopping with the BF for stuff for the summer hosl and we decided to stop being ripped off down here and head up there instead. so was hoping you might know:
    - does it take long to get there?
    - do you need to take your passport or how does that work? (never been to the north in my life)
    - whers the best places / shopping centres to go to?
    - do they allow you to pay in euro or do we have to get sterling and if so whats the rate like?

sorry im clueless about this any advice much appreictaed cheers

    Aw bless!

well depending on where you live will determine how long it will take to get there!! :D

As other posters have informed us, you do not need a passport to go to N.Ireland. It is part of the EU so you'll be alright. ;)

There's two shopping centres in the town - Buttercrane and The Quays. The Quays is the bigger and newer of the two shopping centres. They are in walking distance of each other.

They do allow you to pay in Euro. Some stores give good rates, others don't. And you'll get your change in Sterling.

You can plan your route on Google Maps - and if you go a bit further than Newry the Outlet in Banbridge is really good too; THE OUTLET

i've done dublin airport - newry in just over an hour before. but you're better bypassing it and going to The Outlet.

You would be better to bring Sterling, or else pay with your laser or credit card, if you pay with euro, you most likely will not get a good rate and that will kinda negate the whole purpose of going there. Your bank should be able to tell you the most up to date rate. :)

P.s. Forgot to say, make sure you get there early. My sister was there last Saturday (at about 10.30) and it took her 45 mins to travel about 500 metres and get parked, plus the centres were jammered. She said it was full of southern reg cars, so I think you aren't the only one sick of paying southern prices!

i live near newry here's some rules for you:
-dont go on a saturday/bank holiday if you can
-they dont take laser cards so bring sterling
-you wont need a passport and cant believe that was asked
-try and park away from the quays as its not worth it try the buttercrane or along the street
-oh and dont forget to stop into sainsburys and get your cheap drink its unreal!!

Agree with above poster - Sainsburys is a MUST for the cheap drink - think the Quays is way ahead of the Buttercrane which has gone somewhat downhill - found Debenhams worth a visit - visited the Outlet also ..not very impressed but hey thats only me ..I have heard other people rave about it ..It's in banbridge which is only a bit up the road from Newry can easily do both in one day from Dublin...happy shoppin....

Have had a google and I think buttercrane is my kind of place as its got primark, miss selfridge and top shop - happy days. are buttercrane and the quays near each other (last question I promise! :P)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭viv2

The 2 shopping centres are beside each other, wherever you decide to park leave the car there and walk over to the other one, you will never get parking if you decide to move.If you plan on going to sainsburys its probably best to park there instead of having to haul a trolley full of stuff to the other centre.

Yeah the shops open at twelve in Newry on a Sunday. Even the Supermarkets.

Sainsburys isn't cheap for drink. that just goes to show how completely ripped off we are in the south for buying alcohol.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭dlambirl

Just a quick note to say that the shops in the quays open at 1pm not 12pm. My tip would be to pay in sterling, dont take the shops rate for euros and take your sterling out at the atms in the centre. got myself a debenhams dress yester for £21!!

Does anyone know if the big stores in the North, like Sainsbury, are open tomorrow given that is July 12th and a public holiday there? Obviously once upon a time, I would have assumed they were shut, but times they are a changing.

    Newry FTW!

Last year me and flynnser bf went up to Argos in Newry to get a tent, we ended up saving our selfs €30 iirc then if we had got it in Argos in Dundalk.

    I also lol'd

Once you enter NI you come to an army checkpoint where they will search any southern cars, my family always got away with getting searched because I was born in NI.

Ok im only joking, but I remember when I was a kid there really was an army checkpoint, they removed it years ago but you can you can tell where it was because there is a closed off road where you used when they where removing the checkpoint. Its right beside the roundabout just before you go under the train bridge and on into Newry.

no theyre open newry is a predominantly catholic city and nowhere really closes on the 12th to be honest only places near the marches or in the protestant area's tbh!!

Just to let everyone know that I ended up going to Enniskillen, a very Catholic town, and everywhere was shut with the exception of ASDA (great new store, but not really for fashion - George at ASDA!) and Tesco. ASDA was mobbed and I had to wait 30 minutes for checkout!

Wouldn't have thought 10-15 years ago that it would be safe to be going shopping in Northern Ireland on July 12th!

i wouldnt consider eniskillen to be a VERY catholic town in fact its quite the opposite with union jacks in the centre of the town etc. Newry was wide open today and it was nice and quiet for once which i love cause everyone was obviously too scared to come down lol.

If you are coming into newry from dublin DO NOT take the exit into newry from the first roundabout. Continue straight on for Armagh and when you come to the bottom of the hill take the newry exit at the big roundabout. You will not have to queue with 20 million other irish registered cars and you will be into newry nice and quickly. I should know as I do it every couple of weeks.

What's Newry like in the middle of the week? I'm planning on going there this week. I'll follow your directions, Newmills.

Went to Newry today - I was disappointed thought the shopping centres werent that great . Went to Buttercrane and Quays. Primark was tiny - hardly any shoe section all the cothes shoved together didnt buy a thing not like me at all! New Look was really tiny really disappointed - did get shoes for my sister and a skirt on sale for me but prob would have got the same in Omni. Maybe I was expecting something on the scale of Blanch or Dundrum SC and it just is not like that at all. If you go mid-week - the food areas shut early and to be honest arent great. There was one jewellery shop in the quays giving 90p for a euro so really good exchange rate. Sainburys was ok - I think I just had it built up in my head to be something fantastic and it really was not.

As a Dub residing and working in Newry- I'm ruined by the cheap prices when I come back down south. I refuse to pay €12 for a bottle of wine when I can get whatever's on special offer in Sainsburys for £4.99 for a very decent bottle.
I agree that Argos is way cheaper in Newry than down south also.
I bought a bag in River Island a few months ago and it was £30 which on my credit card bill exchanged to €37. The exact same bag down south was €45.
I don't buy clothes down the south now unless I know I'm getting a great bargain, the sales in Debenhams in the Quays are brilliant.
