Travel to interview

    If I was in the UK I wouldn't have any issue to ask for reimbursement but want to check the 'norm' here in Ireland

    Went for 1st interview in the office I would be working in, fairly local to where I live. Interview went very positively and they want me back for a second interview.....only this time it is a good 5 hour or so drive or a flight + taxi away. (my car works fine, but is old - I wouldn't fancy risking 10 hours driving in a single day - asking for trouble!)

    I applied for a local job in a local office - is it fair to politely expect/ask them to clarify how they will reimburse my travel when I call to confirm my intention to attend next interview.

    Appreciate any feedback from those in the know!

    Hi snellers

    That seems like an unusual thing they are doing, to ask you to go to a further office for the interview. Have you discussed why this is happening with them? Did they tell you at the first interview that they were specifically recruiting for the local office and not the one further way? They should have asked you if you were agreeable to travel at the initial interview should you be asked back to a second one. I would definitely get in contact with them and tell them you're a bit confused if they only asked you to do this later on after the first interview. That sounds a long way to go especially if the job's in the local office...I am sure they won't mind you explaining that your car is old and that you didn't expect to have to travel such a long distance, and see what they say then. Depends on the company but if they're a large anough company and have HR dept they should understand and offer assistance.

    many thanks for clarifying....

    The job is definately based locally and interview elsewhere was never mentioned at any stage. I almost responded via e-mail confirming attendance until I re-read the e-mail and realised the location.

    Def do call them to clear your mind, it may even be a mistake, sometimes they have generic letters for different offices etc and maybe thay made an admin boo boo, but it's not just the norm and normally they would seek your agreement to do that beforehand or at least warn you in advance that they expected this. Good luck with it anyway.

    Could just be that the HR / Senior management that need to give the thumbs up are based in the office that's further away. It's certainly not unheard of to be interviewed away from the place you would be working, for a variety of reasons.

    If you ring them up, you could try asking what the "normal arrangements" are for candidates travelling long distances to an interview. Some people may recommend being more direct though.

    Actually its quite usual for you to have to go to their district headquarters for anything but a junior interview on the 2nd round.
    I've heard of people go to USA/UK for 2nd rounds.

    Not unheard of to change location on second interview, of course sure.
    But my point was that an organised company would inform you of it at your first interview as snellers says above, this is first time he/she was informed of it. Anyways, I'm sure they will clarify when snellers calls them.
