    Good morning all,

First time poster to this knowledgeable community so looking for advice after reading many postings, I'm looking for a DVD/HDD player to replace my trustly Panasonic VCR. I was going to buy the Sony 750 (approx €300 in Power City) but I had a look at the Richer Sounds website yesterday and they have both the Panasonic DMREX768 and the Pioneer 545 for far less money. I bought some hi-fi separates from Richer Sounds in the 90's when they were on the quays so I know they do good product.

    Thanks for all replies

    Hi piaget
I bought the Sony HXD-870 (identical to the 750 except that it has a Built in Digital Terrestrial Tuner) in the Sony shop in O'Connell Street for €266.
The sale price was €339 reduced from €379 but I pointed out that the Argos price was €266.99 and they reluctantly lowered the price accordingly.
This is the best DVD/HDD recording device I have ever seen.
There is nothing on the market that even comes close to it on features. except maybe the 500GB version.
Dont buy the 750 for €300. Do what I did.

Bought a Philips DVDR3597H at the weekend after seeing it on special in DID, asked the fella in the shop can it record from satellite (have one of the freeview Lidl ones) and he said ye no problem, set it up yesterday and only has an analogue tuner so can't record from the satellite, thinking of returning it and getting the Sony HXD-870 as recommeded but just wondering can that be set up to record from a freeview satellite??

As long as your freeview sat box has a scart output.
I'm surprised that the Philips DVDR3597H couldn't handle that, because I bought one of the first Phlips DVD recorders, and hooked it up via the scart to a Lidl Freeview Digital Satellite Set top box. Perfect recordings every time.

It does actually, my bad :o

Comes in on EXT2, didn't flick through them the other night, can only record what is on the satellite but suppose it'll do until the anologue signal is turned off and then I'll upgrade to a digital tuner model.

My mother's looking for a HDD/DVD recorder. At the moment she has an analog ariel into a CRT TV. Which model will record a signal from this?

It's possible she might get Sky in the future and an LCD, so would need to consider this too.

    Any recommendations?

For digital picture quality and features, I would recommend the Sony HXD-870 mentioned above.
But most makes of recorder are pretty good. Its just the overall Pic quality and feature list that seperates Say a Sony from a Wharfedale.

Hope the OP doesn't mind me piggybacking on this one?

Is there a blueray or HDD recorder that comes with a built-in cinema sound system?
I want to keep the number of boxes to a minimum, and don't mind paying a bit -within reason- for a decent quality machine.

Thanks for all your help here, just an update I eventually bought the Pioneer DVR 550 from Richer Sounds at a bargain price, great spec and very user friendly.
    Cheers Piaget
