Just thought I'd stick this in here lads, see if you lot had any thoughts on the situation, I started a similar thread over on the Aussie Rules Forum this morning too.

So, AFL Player Agent Ricky Nixon is to set up a recruitment drive in Ireland to get players for the AFL.

    Link 1 HeraldSun (Aussie Paper)

    Link 2 RTÉ

Well, seemingly Tadgh Kenelly has come out and warned the GAA not to deal with Nixon (no link at the moment) as has Jim Stynes, and Nixon has come back saying it's sour grapes on the part of Kenelly, that Kenelly himself had approached the AFL about becoming involved with a similar process.

Anyway, on Morning Ireland this morning there was an interview with Kenelly saying that he never approached the AFL in any shape or form, but once again warning players to "be wary" of Nixon. He went on to say that Nixon was offering no "protection" for recruits, and that he would be there as a "sounding board" for players.

yeah, Nixon has said that there are AFL clubs here doing their own thing and doing it badly, I wonder if it was referring to these two gentlemen by inference.

They're obviously in compitition with each other. Cant wait to see what contract they offer me when they come calling.

Oh no .... DesF on the GGA board, 'OhNoYouD'ont' can only be minutes away from weighing in.....

Kenelly mentioned on the radio that there were two new teams joing the AFL this year or next and they would be looking for players and hence theer would be a huge recruitment drive in Ireland.

I reckon he is working on setting up his own recruitment drive, as a player who are you going to listen to, Kerryman Kenelly or some Aussie called Nixon ?

technically because GAA players are members of their clubs and sign a membership form, surely GAA clubs would have to be compensated for losing a young player to an AFL club?

That'd be the line I'd take if I were Nicky Brennan

I know gaa players don'tget paid, but its still a form of contract

I disagree - technically, signing with an AFL team doesn't mean that you'd have to give up membership of your local GAA club (not in the same way that soccer clubs are entitled to compensation when players move clubs) so I don't think asking for compensation would get anyone very far.

As for the issue at hand, it's hard to say exactly what's going on without knowing the ins and outs of it (or being more familiar with the Australian scene) but it'll be interesting to see how it pans out over here...

So when a player moves to another country to work, his local GAA club should be compensated by his new employers ?

    That makes no sense.
