well i did my cycle from balbriggan to thomas street this morning....
left at 6am. and was in the door of work at 745....
not with out war wounds though...came of the bike after a roundabout after swords when i tried to get on a stupid cycle path...bad idea.... lets just say there was a lot of blood...
so once i had gathered myself and cleaned up my leg (wet wipes are a miracle) i headed of again....only to fall over at traffic lights near dorset street. at that stage all i could do was laugh, i was in pain from the earlier fall and knew my bike was all scratched :(
so i set of again anyway and made it to the office without any more mishaps....so im now feeling very sorry for myself with bloody leg, bruised elbow and brusied pride....

I find it's the pride that hurts the most after a crash sometimes. And then when you're shook, you have another crash shortly afterwards.

Once crashed the bike and fell off twice on one 50km spin :o

Did anyone help you when you went down?

Jaysus...that's some epic adventure! Hopefully you make it home alive

How'd you come off at the lights?

    Oh No ... I hope you're ok.
Will you be ok to cycle home tonight?

hope you're ok and that any damage is minor. did the wind play a part? tis treacherous out there this morning. don't get back on the bike till you're ready but don't loose confidence either, if you stick at it there'll be other days when you'll arrive at work with a huge smile on your face.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭bobtjustice

    Bummer, hope your ok man.
Took a tumble myself this morning and have busted my ankle, feels like theres a tennis ball in it at the moment.
Wind was/is a huge factor today.Don't worry about cycling home get on the bike and fears will be gone within 2-3 minutes.

Jeebus Sooty hope you're ok. There was a mad head wind all the way in too. Balbriggan into Town commute is a monster let alone falling twice. You're a lot braver than me. And more patient, think I would have thrown the bike through a window on the second fall.

    Well done.

You scratched the bike as well as your leg did you? Damn and double damn!
sounds like you were making very good time though, espcially considering the wind.

Tell me it wasn't your lovely, pretty (same as mine) Focus that got scratched up

Seriously though, sorry to hear it, that's certainly an epic way to start any day!

oh jeses i dont know how many times i considered turning back for home cause of that wind....it was unreal...there was no break from it all the way in.
the wind didnt actually play any part in the falls. :o
i wont be doing that commute daily....was only doing it today to get some mileage in for this weekend. when i get brave again i may do it once a week...
i would have made it in an hour and a half if i hadnt fell!!....oh well.
ya LBD my fecking new bike is scratched im gutted! my leg is a mess though. im not going to be looking so pretty in my shorts this weekend!;)
bobtjustice were u able to carry on cycling on that ankle...holy god that must be sore!

Yeah it didn't seem to bad at the time, only now while sitting at work its throbbing a bit, I have an ice pack strapped to it at the moment. So hopefully it wont be too bad come 3 o'clock or so when I get back on the bike.
Had the horrible case of unclipping and resting my foot on the pedal (i was holding on to a railing to balance) , low and behold i clip back in without realising, wind catches me and over i go, so I twisted my ankle trying to get out before I hit the deck and I've managed to pull a lump out of the back of my leg as well, along with denting my pride too :D.
Not as bad as your falls but painful none the less.

Sorry to hear about your fall Sooty, but as everyone has said, just get back on and keep going, the fear/pain/doubt will recede as you gobble up the miles. Hope the pain isn't too bad.

The weather is a pain in the 4rse. I can't believe I'm still wearing a base layer and leg warmers on the 1st of July. It's just wrong.

But it still beats driving, right guys?;)

Leg warmers and base layer?? that's a bti much now ... I just keep my armwamers ...

Do people still cycle with full winter gear now for 'sweat training purposes'??

Had a base layer this morning as it was quite cold along with a high vis gillet thingy as it was quite cloudy and dark when I was heading to work.
Was sweating like a like a nun in a (wait i better not do that joke here), ..... i was warm getting to work.! :D

Good to hear your enthusiasm isn't dented. I wouldn't worry too much about the bike if it's only aesthetic; it's almost inevitable that it is going to happen at some stage (it is with me anyway!) Look at it as an initiation. I have well-scuffed STI levers with missing caps on two bikes myself.

Take care of yourself and make sure you are OK and don't aggrevate any injuries (sounds just like scrapes, I hope.)

In my defence...leg warmers went on only today because it started to rain just before I left for work, and I was putting shoe covers on aswell. Shoes got soaked last week and I didn't want it to happen again. Base layer (very light pearl thingy) has been a constant in June.

The more I try to explain, the sadder I think I really am.

Hmm, I wore knee warmers, arm warmers, a base layer and overshoes today. Slight overkill.

That’s some poxy luck there Sooty not what you needed after building up the motivation to face up to what is a fairly serious commute. You’re on the ropes now so you gotta roll with the punches and suck it up and get back in the saddle like you’re planning to do. For me, the sense of achievement is always that bit more when there’s been some pain along the way, for another boxing analogy Ali’s one along the lines of ‘a hero is someone that has to overcome adversity in order to triumph’ will do nicely.

Could it be that you were maybe a little tentative with it being your first journey on that route? I find cycling in built-up areas is like any hurler will tell you – go in hard and you won’t get hurt, by being assertive you make other road users’ mind up for them rather than the other way round. That said, there’s nothing in your post that points to that being the cause, it could just be sheer bad luck which we’ve all had.

Hope you’re wearing a helmet at all times. A good few years back a helmet saved my life when I was cycling through Rathmines to college and a car came out from the estate on the left just before Portobello bridge looking not to yield, didn’t see me and nailed me – I bounced off his windscreen as he was turning right and landed in the other lane just as a van was stopping to turn right so it didn’t catch me on the volley. Landed right on my head with the legs following over the top. Without a helmet it was game over but I ended up without a scratch, so I don’t care what any report says, I’ll always be wearing a helmet from here on out.

Anyways, no one could blame you if you decided to jack it in for a while after that nightmare start, but fair play to you for planning to stick with it – it’ll feel all the sweeter when you’re cruising up and down from Balbriggan on a daily basis.

I got up nice and early myself to do my first commute from Ratoath to Finglas (20K). I didn't do it because of the wind, I wasn't sure what the old N2 was going to be like and I thought it might be a bit dangerous. Hopefully Thursday or Friday I will get to do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭sooty11

sheer bad luck frank! the fecking wind blew my bike over before i even got on it this morning...once side scratched...was mental over that. 1st fall....other side scratched! and me badly scratched....
ya id always wear the helmet. good job u had the sense to wear ur helmet that day!.
this wouldnt be a daily commute for me, was just doing today for last minute training for rok....

    Tell me about it!

I know you can't tell when you're in shock or something like that... but next time a bus driver tries to kill me, and only stops his attempt at pulling in and hitting me when I bang on the window, I'm going to have a good sit down or walk in to work.

Less than ten mins later I slam into one of the bollards along the Docklands' cycle paths. Bike and my leg were fooked.

One of the worst parts about it was straight after the bus driver claimed he actually had seen me all along - which was more shocking to know since I was along the centre of the bus and he kept pulling in until I banged on the window - and then he said I shouldn't have been scaring passengers!!!

Had an accident along one of the Docklands cycle paths myself about a week ago. Overtook another cyclist, pulled in, then noticed there was an on-footpath cycle track along a quiet footpath so thought I'd be a "good boy" for once and use it. However what looked like a point where the kerb was down to road level to faciliate entry/exit to the cycle path was actually slightly above road level, meaning I clipped it with my wheel and went flying. Ended up ripping both my gloves and the palm of my left hand. It's still all sore and crusty at the moment. The other guy came up behind me asking was I alright while I lay there with my pride hurt worse than my hand :) I cycled behind him sheepishly for a while before I recovered from embarrassment enough to overtake him again :o

The old N2 isn't pleasant at all tbh. It's in really bad condition with potholes and there are lots of trucks and speeding drivers using it as a rat run (at least on the parts I've occasionally used while commuting from Finglas to Mulhuddart). You're probably better off using the new dual carriageway.

One of my patients is taking action against a local authority after a fall due to a "step" where the cyclelane joined the road.
