Teaching Council.......GRRR

So I finished the dip this year and (woo hoo) got a job. BUT I can't sign off on it officially untill I'm fully registered with the Teaching Council. UCD is supposed to be sending them on copies of my dip results. So I phoned the TC today to ask how long before I get the registration number that the school needs before it can put me on the payroll, and they said I'd be waiting upto 12 weeks! Like WTF, how can it possibly take that long? It will be September then. So does that mean I won't be able to start my job on time?

Also, what exactly does the TC do? I read their website, but I can't see whats so special about them; everything that they do was already being done by somebody else. I.E. Dept of Ed already had a teacher registration section and the universities are there to promote research.

There were some lovely photos of TC comittee members enjoying themselves at a conference last February though so at least they spend all those registration fees well.

We were told it could take until October and that this would be taken into account when it comes to payment and starting work, etc. The Teaching Council is woefully slow at getting things done. When they visited us in college the speaker showed about 15 areas that they were responsible for and they only seemed to be working on 3 or 4.

Couldn't agree more. I've just finished a PGCE in Liverpool. And I now have to pay the Teaching Council 90euro to glance over my transcript and tick a box saying it's the equivalent to a H.Dip.
    Complete rip off.
Reminds me of that bank advert about paying for the shareholders bubbly

The insane thing is that I ALREADY have a teaching number from the Dept of Education from when I did Primary Subbing. That took a week to get and was free... :D

This thread could be the longest thread in boards if ye want to, no one can tell you what they actually do bar the hypothetical professional development and representation bull. Just look at who has all the jobs, all reps from our unions so there is your (cynical) answer from me!!

Well I rang them today with a simple question that they must have come across before and the woman on the phone gave me what seems to be the standard response to any registration queries, although it had nothing to do with my actual question.

I also got the exact same response by e-mail.

Oh and it was the same response we got in April from the rep.

What was the response... "go on our website and read the information there" or in other words, "get the **** off the phone". That's their answer to most things.

Lol no they just gave me the standard "You will be sent a registration form shortly....blah blah blah...."

I knew that already! That's not what I asked!
