Played sillogue yesterday in a 3 ball, ahead of us was one guy who insisted on carrying his suit jacket thrown over one shoulder for the whole round and neatly folding it on each green before putting. He was followed by a 2 ball ( playing directly ahead of us,) and behind us was one lad followed by yet another one lad, we were held up occasionally but still got around in 4 hours, but on every hole the two behind us stood chatting on the tee but still insisted on playing on their own.
Both were poor players but particularly the lad following us who waited until we had left the green to take his 2nd shot and then got nowhere near the greens- it was laughable at times..
As we weren't playing slow the question is should we have allowed these two to play through..?
And has anyone ever witnesed anything like this before..?

If the guy/guys behind didn't look interested in coming through then I wouldn't have called them through especially if you were immediately behind those in front. You could have mentioned it........."come on through if you want to"

A one ball has no standing on the course so you don't have to let him/her through. However they have paid their green fees and it's only manners to let them through if you are holding them up. I've been a one ball many's a time when practising and if those in front are holding me up then I'll skip past them. I have also been asked by a 4 ball if they can come through when I was being held up......."you realise that you have no standing...."......to me that's the height of bad manners even though they were correct. A 4 ball will always hold up a one-ball.

That's ignorance of the highest regard if you ask me. As if you'd be holding them up anyway.

It's a bit of a pet hate of mine to see lads ahead of you waiting on greens to clear when they're over 200yards out, then duffing it front of them. I play off 15 and I would hit maybe one green a year from over 200 yards so I usually play unless there's no one behind me.

That's no longer true. A single player has equal standing on the course. And rightly so too.

Regardless of how many players were directly behind me (1,2,3 or 4) if I was holding play up I'd call them through

Thanks for correcting me Graeme. It was always a stupid rule.

That's a difficult one. If they want to get close to the green but might if they catch it correctly hit the green then they should wait.....if they end up hitting somebody then they'll be in trouble.

What I'd do is to pick a club that would not reach the green. I'd try to land in a good place to give myself an "easy" shot. I agree that when things are slow then it is frustrating waiting and then watching them duff the ball 50 yards.

I often go round Sillogue on my own , usually late in the evening and never have any hassle being called through etc. Have seen lots of unusual things up there, like 5 players on a hole, buggy races, players without shirts on. Its a bit different at times!!

It's a mental kip alright, good craic seeing the headcases drinking cider and the likes on the course.
I reckon John Daly should be made honourary pro there :p
Pity it's a crap course though, lest we forget..
