Desktop/Wireless/Laptop

Here is my problem which has driven me crazy for 2 weeks or more and I cannot come up with a solution. BT 2 MB broadband.
Always had old Zytel 600 modem connected via ethernet cable to desktop and worked perfectly, nice and fast.
Bought a laptop (HP Pavilion 6700) and decided to set up wireless modem/router, it is Nethopia 2247NWG.
Works perfectly on the laptop via wireless and also Ethernet via the Nethopia 2247NWG.
My idea was to have the Nethopia connected to desktop via Ethernet cable and then free to use the laptop around the house.
The laptop part is fine but the desktop is very very slow, takes ages to find internet pages, even www.google.ie. Tried all sorts like disabling firewall and checking IP address for BT. That seems to be ok.
After failing to solve the problem decided the way round it was to buy Wireless PCI card for the desktop. Did that, installed it fine but the desktop is still very slow at finding internet pages.
Reconnnect to Zytel and everything is back to normal, nice and fast again.
Has anyone any ideas of what the h??! is wrong. ???
The desktop is old 2002 (Dell dimensions 8200) 1.8 mhz with 512MB RAM.
Why is it ok with the old modem and usless with the Nethopia.?
The only other possible solutions are to get a new BT wirless modem or in the extreme case a new desktop which would make this a very expensive laptop. !!!!
If anyone has any ideas of how to solve this I would be very greatful.
By the way I tried using both modems on different phone connections only to find the DSL would noe connect when both modems were connected.
    Thanks again

Well firstly two modems on a dsl line will not work.

I am baffled as you are. What about unintalling and reinstalling the ethernet card on the Dell just to clear any rubbish that may in some way be hanging around in there?

A cheaper alternative than a new Dell might be try a new ethernet card - should cost only 10-15 euros.

Adding another 512 Mb to the Dell would also give you an improvement I am sure if you could get your hands on some cheap stuff.

Another solution might be to borrow a wireless router if you could and try that with the zytel?

Thank you for the reply. You are probably right about trying another PCI card, it would be a cheaper method and worth a try.
New PC is a last resort.
    Thanks again.
