I bought a UK Sunday paper today out of curiosity, and found a wonderful article that said that Gateshead council, in the North East UK, had become concerned about the health risks of people putting too much salt on the food they buy from chippers. So, the council have issued salt cellars with only five holes to all chippers to cut down on salt usage.

That has really brightened up my Sunday and renewed my faith in the PC brigade:D

Personally, when it comes to chipper chips, its the vinegar thats the money.

It'll be the grease that gets them in the end.

If they want more salt they just shake for longer. How will 5 holes make a difference

Because that requires extra effort and will take anything up to 10 seconds longer!. Lazy people won't want to wait that long before diving in to munch their sweet heart-attack inducing supper.

The working class should be allowed to eat and drink themselves to death if they want. Less of a social welfare drain on the economy in the long run.

This is why the working class should not be allowed breed.

Working class=social welfare drain? Do you mean non-working class? Working people contribute, non-working people don't.

If you're going to be rabidly right-wing, do it right. :D

Apparently one of their councillors asked that question, which suggest that he must have had control of the council's single brain cell on that day. Perhaps the point here is to wonder how they arrived at the excess salt programme in the first place? Did they send out survey teams (Salt Outreach Officers) to measure how many grains of salt were put on chips, presumably ones that met EU standards of dimensions (not more than 10 mm cross section and not more that 50 mm long with no more than 0.5 mg/l of vinigar--OK, joke). I can just imagine a council official watching over my shoulder as I sprinkle some salt on my chips. I love the PC world:D

PC my a$$ ... if those Gateshead politicos really cared, I mean REALLY cared about their constituents ... they would introduce a Health tax on salt.

Of course, such a Health tax would be strictly revenue neutral and any monies gained would be pumped back into care in the community projects.

Good idea, maybe they could give the raised revenue to the poor Roma gypsies who are afflicted by a debilitating dislike of work.

To be fair, I find that chips can often be drowned in salt at the auld chippers. There's a 1:3 salt to chip ratio most places. Blergh.

I thought it might be obvious that I was talking about the staff who apply the salt to the chips, as it would be too ridiculous to fathom I'd complain about myself pouring far too much salt for my liking on my own chips in a fast food establishment. :pac:

Wouldnt be in agreement with this one.

It's like that 'fat-tax' proposed awhile ago. I think, myself, we shouldnt be taxing the foods. Would it not be better to tax the people themselves.

Weigh everybody and those who are over a certain limit should be taxed by the pound (this wouldn't include body builders and other fitness freaks).

    Just a thought...possibly a bit extreme.

Why not? They're wasting valuable food by maintaining a body that has a high consumption. :pac:

Isn't it the convention that salt shakers generally have only one hole? It's pepper that has lots of holes.

I have ruined food in restaurants before, who put pepper into the one holed salt shaker before.
