    does anyone know when i should be thinking about getting a timing belt done for my toyota avensis 1.6 strata.Its at 47000 now

    Most cars are 60,000 miles/5 years, whichever comes first.

    I think Toyota use a timing chain. Could be wrong but I think so. Best thing is to check the manual anyway. It will state when to get the belt changed if its a belt.

    All Toyota VVTI engines use a timing chain which should last the life of the car if you keep it serviced regularly and within hte recommended intervals.

    yup, it's a chain,

    some Lexus VVT-i engines have timing belts though.
