Is your PC on all the time ? Mines always on , never stops downloading , plus it plays me music at night to put me to sleep, and it's always handy to just pull up a chair and go on the net without the big bother of booting it. What about you ? hmm I may have asked this before, can't remember

Nope but seeing as I use it so much it may as well be.

    Hey man

When I lived in the UK my PC was on all the time at Uni. Unfortunately now I only have it on about 15 hours a day because I am home. Great when it is always on.

Desktop (jet engine!) is turned off when finished with it.

Leave the lappy sleeping when not using it though. Have to save power and the world :pac:.

Sometimes left on overnight for a few days. Work days, I just leave it off until I come home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,727 ✭✭✭✭Sherifu

Mostly no. The odd time I would have left it on if I was waiting on something.

Booting isn't a pb for me, it's pretty quick.

My main desktop is generally on all day.
I turn it off when not in use for a long period of time.

I have a server and router/firewall in my room, built from a couple of old computers
that are left on constantly 24/7 though I admit.
The leggy bill isn't too bad:)

Nah, the noise keeps me awake.
And I don't really do anything that requires me leaving something running overnight.
Actually, I don't like having the room lit up with LED's either... I used to use one of those microsoft optical mice with the big glaring red light on the back... pointless and annoying.

pc/server goes in to standby mode in less than 5 seconds and comes back to life just as quick, so turn it on and off as I need it

use my laptop most of the time, use the hibernate or standyby mode for quickish start up time

I usually switch it off myself... Don't like having things running if I'm not around.

No. Does that upset those that might turn it into a zombie?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 583 ✭✭✭dutopia

Unless you're using it most of the time it's a terrible waste of electricity - I don't see the point. Most modern computers can boot up in a minute or so anyway, not like you're waiting a few minutes back in the Windows 98 days.

I generally leave mine on a low power state for Folding@Home number crunching. Thats a good enough reason for me.

    I leave a PC (1.4ghz, 512mb) on 24/7.

I have a Vent server going (although not being used lately) and plus the PC is downstairs is in nice friendly position so that the family can just move the mouse and it wakes up instantly for browsing the web.

I don't leave my laptop on 24/7, but mind you it usually end up being on for about 12 hours a day....... but its in sleep when not in use

I have a router, 2 NAS servers and an old Sony Vaio that are running 24/7. The laptop is just for downloads (RSS feeds ftw), fit for nothing else at this stage! All my other machines are only on when they are needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,374 ✭✭✭Gone West

yeah there are a few servers always on, but they're tucked away where I can't hear the noise. Theres a streaming media machine as well, also put away where I cant see or hear it.

My desktop at home, though is rarely on. Maybe 2 hours a week. Laptop is always on, and work computer hadn't been restarted in 60 days until this morning when a usb port started inexplicably smoking and the box restarted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Shiny

Running 24/7 most of the time.

Running maybe 14hours a day when using the faster alternatives
    to torrenting.

Have it also connected to a Watt-meter, pulling around 200 Watts
with the monitor off. So costs around 70c a day to keep it running.

It generally is powered up when I wake and switched off before I sleep. As was said the noise and LEDs wouldn't be great for a light sleeper!

Get's turned off at night unless I'm downloading or doing something else that requires it to be on.

is leaving the pc on a fire risk, thats the only thing would give me pause for thought, i get a bit paranoid about it when leaving the house

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

My servers on 24/7, i run torrentflux on it and do all my downloading there, saves leaving other pc's on just for downloads, i rebooted it a few weeks ago. My own pc is in my bedroom, so i mostly shut this down at night as its overclocked and can be noisy enough to keep me awake when the fans ramp up. The kids pc is in the kitchen and is usually left on, but sometimes put on standby. Laptops are always shut down at night.

My computer has a sleep function, goes from apparantly off to alive in less than 10 seconds. Thus it pretty much runs only when I'm using it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭johnk123

Are there any real dangers to your computer to leaving it on for prolonged periods of time?? Like can any of the components "burn out" and suffer poor performance

Yes, your wallet is in danger of being raped for electricity bills when you could save yourself and the environment.

My laptop is turned off when I go to bed or I am out unless I am downloading or something. Normally, when I am in the house, it's on.

turn off when no one is using it,i am saving the earth!!

while recently kinda scared after using it long hours(10+ hrs),especially playing 5/6 hrs of gears of war etc games,i think i smell something...the cpu casing can fry a egg too...*shrug*now i touch the casing frequently to see if it is 'fine'...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,614 ✭✭✭BadCharlie

Due to the power usage which adds up if u have it on 24/7 and also the fire risk i turn it off most nights. Only at weekends i seem to have it on for 48hours due to the amount of time i spend on it, also the fact im home a-lot of this time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭evil-monkey

ya i used to leave mine on 24/7...but since i upgraded at christmas there was no need. can boot now in a few seconds. if i were downloading or something i'd leave it on. and i'd leave it on during the day alright, because i'd be coming and going from it from morning to night. but once i hit they sack i'd shut her down unless i was listening to music. mainly because that lil hum in the background annoys me.
