The George Bush Memorial Sewer

There has been a long tradition of US presidents having landmarks named after them - the JFK airport, Mount Rushmore and Washington to name just a few.

But activists in San Francisco are campaigning to get the city's largest sewerage works named after George W Bush as a "fitting monument to the president's work".

More than 8,500 signatures have already been gathered in support of the plan which has kicked up a stink.

Under US law any proposal which is supported by a petition containing more than 7,168 signatures must go to a vote.

Activists from the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco have also called for a "synchronised flush" of the sewerage plant to mark the end of Bush's presidency in January.

Brian McConnell, the commission's organiser, said: "In 50 years from now, we want people to see George Bush's name on that plant, and ask each other what went wrong.

"We want them to be reminded of the Iraq war, and his other dramatic mistakes, and this is the perfect way to do it.

"This is the way the democratic process is supposed to work, even though it's a silly idea in some people's eyes."

The sewage works is currently named the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant and has won awards for keeping the streets of the city, along with the ocean, clean.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, which owns the plant, says it gets the joke but is nevertheless dismayed.

Tony Winnicker, spokesman for the plant, said: "If you are looking for a place to make a negative statement about the Bush administration's impact on the environment, this would be the last place to do it."

Howard Epstein, chair of the San Francisco Republican Party, has called the vote an abuse of the system and the work of "typical San Francisco crazies".

Maybe there is some justice in the world. I ****ing love it.

    That's a bit of a random number isn't it?

I bet originally someone submitted a petition with 7,167 signatures, and the lawmakers said "Sorry, you need 7,168 signatures to go to vote. Close, but no cigar."

What about naming the M50 after him?

    - despite all the hype in the end it didn't do what it was supposed to
    - Costs waaayyyy too much money
    - Those who have to use it are driven 'effin insane by it.
    - Finally being upgraded but the new one seems even worse than the old one.

Such a fitting tribute to him, as both are usually full of sh*t

So George Bush gets a sewer named after him.

Hmmmm. Was the Bertie Bowl actually a toilet bowl ?

    Excellent. I love the idea.

Its a nice idea and all but surely the fact that its won awards for keeping the place clean should rule it out since it would be doing the opposite of George Bush. :pac:

Great Idea, but Bush was just the puppit, the people pulling the strings should also be included:)

That will be the worst sewage system ever: its going to flood. I just know it. And then it will take them a week just to start fixing it.
