OK, so I'm looking to update my ipod a little. Anyone got any ideas? Some bands I like:

    The Smiths
    Radiohead
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (first album more)
    Vampire Weekend
Arcade Fire (prob my favourite at the moment)
    Regina Spektor
    Nina Simone
    Arctic Monkeys (first album moreso)
The Smashing Pumpkins (up until Melloncollie)
    Four Tet
Sigur Ros (love the newest album)

And loads more, but you get the idea! So if you's know of anyone good that i may not of heard of that'd be cool. I'm trying to veer away from my naturally broody leanings (The Smiths, Radiohead) and find more stuff that is good but also a bit happier (loving Vampire Weekend at the moment). Thanks in advance...

I quite like what I've heard of Los Campesinos! for big shouty fun, and Efterklang make for a nice compromise between Sigur Ros and Arcade Fire. My current favourite band o' the year are Gutter Twins, but man, that won't discourage your brooding any at all...

I have a very similar taste in music to you and have loads of bands to reccommend,
but I only want to reccommend one that stands above all the others.

    I am talking about;

    Sufjan Stevens

    - truly amazing get his album called: Come on hear the illinoise, you will not be dissapointed

Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People

Broody? Try Boxer by the National.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

    Yep check out The National.

Also get yourself some Bright Eyes ('I'm Wide Awake It's Morning' and 'Fevers and Mirrors' are the best albums to start with) and maybe the Cold War Kids latest offering.

First of all, my three favourite albums of this year are essential in my opinion...

Alas I Cannot Swim - Laura Marling
Love At The End Of The World - Sam Roberts
    Fleets Foxes - Fleet Foxes

If you want 'broody' stuff then...

For Emma, Forever Ago - Bon Iver
    April - Sun Kil Moon
    Boxer - The National
    Alligator - The National
The Midnight Organ Fight - Frightened Rabbit
The Hollow Of The Morning - Gemma Hayes

    More uplifting positive stuff...

Stay Positive - The Hold Steady
Heretic Pride - The Mountain Goats
    Visitor - The Dodos
Moi et Mon Camion - Merz

Thats basically folk/indie music, plenty of good electronic/Hip-Hop out there as well. ;)

Haven't heard of any of those bands, which is exactly what I want. Keep em coming :)

Get ''Brighten the Corners'' by Pavement. Love that album, makes me feel happy.
''Yield'' by Pearl Jam is nice for the summer I think.
I definitely second the Bon Iver album, it's the best album I have heard in months, quite broody, but brilliant. Check his performance of "Skinny Love" on Jools Holland.
Get the Stone Roses first album if you haven't already, great great album.
Summery, Nice album? WEEZER - "THE BLUE ALBUM". What an album, so so good.
And maybe "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine, broody, but great.

Check out múm then. Pretty much all their stuff is great, really nice but sometimes chilling atmospheric music.

Also try checking out Fugazi. '13 Songs', 'In On The Killtaker' or 'The Argument' are all exceptionally good.

'Bivouac' and '24 Hour Revenge Therapy' by Jawbreaker

For you're more broody tendencies 'Spiderland' by Slint is a must have!

I'll think of more when I get to it...

I like a lot of the bands on your list OP, here's a cross section of what I'm currently listening to:

    Sissy Wish - Tuning In
Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs, Plans
    Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (I reference this album too much, but it is great)
Sparklehorse - Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain
Tori Amos - Boys For Pele or Scarlett's Walk (2 very different albums but equally great)
Depeche Mode - Singles 86>98 (If you don't have any early DM albums, this is good)
    Mansun - Six
    Mew - Frengers
The Cardigans - Long Gone Before Daylight. (A lot of ppl overlook this lot but this is a fine album. Good pop songs with a folk-like feel to them)

Hope you find something you enjoy, there's been some very good suggestions on this thread so far, some I have to check out myself!

Sufjan Stevens makes pretty excellent christian tinged folk music. In fact, he is probably as close to a folk God as there is at present.

Close to a folk God? I like Stevens, but Christ, he's over-hyped. It's ridiculous. Yes, he has a nice voice and his music is obviously laden with colloquial and traditional references, thus he's very folk (maybe uber-folk). But saying folk God part is way off the mark. Any Irish person can pick up and acoustic guitar and throw together a few tunes about the Cliffs of Moher and such like.
I prefer his non-locational songs anyway.

Even though he's not that folk: Elliott Smith > Sufjan Stevens.

Anyway, my recommendations to Mr. Daitheo are as follows:
Oppenheimer- Really juicy electro-pop brilliance from this Northern duo who have had Tim Wheeler and the the Bronx vocalist feature for a song on each of their albums.
The Flaming Lips- Based on that list of your's, you really should make it your business to pick up The Soft Bulletin or Yoshimi.
The Twilight Sad- Shoegaze/ dream-pop and all those genres have been applied to this Scottish group in the past. It's really melodic, progressive and magical music, fronted by a man with a Scottish accent thicker than Billy Connolly.
Love- Forever Changes is the opus of the 60's, I think. It's a mish-mash of psychedelia, folk and rock, done in a subtle and understated manner.

few I've got on a fair bit lately...

The Weakerthans (everyone who listens to The Weakerthans falls for them pretty quick, give 'em a go)

Au Revoir Simone (Brilliant, three girls with keyboards- simple and catchy)

    Modest Mouse

    The New Pornographers

    Blonde Redhead

Alkaline Trio (but not the latest one, Good Mourning or From Here to Infirmary)

    Sleater-Kinney

Really are too many bands to mention,

Joy Division (forget all the depression and moody meaning to the lyrics and just listen to the music)
    Mogwai,
    Black Francis,
    Modest Mouse,
Any thing by Broken Social Scene and the bands involved in them (Stars, Feist, Metric etc) actually really into Canadian music at the moment.
    Blood Red Shoes,
    Jape,

and for fun music try LemonJelly.

I've also been going back to the oldies recently, ramones, clash etc!! And will always listen to the Doors, the album 'Roadhouse Blues' in particular - peacefrog is a great little song!!
