Traveling with gear + protection

I'm heading to New York in a few weeks and want to bring the 40D and two lenses, from just glancing around for backpacks, Lowepro and Tamrac are the two big names. Any advice on which I should go for since I can't find any shops near me that stock them. Sling bags seem to be a good idea as I have had one before (not for photography), but I'm not sure if they are as secure or safe as others.

Can anyone recommend lens cases (ebay shop for example), I'm looking for hard cases, or can anyone provide some advice on which type to go with?

Always use protection.

I have a hard case for my camera gear. It's a Storm Case iM2500. I bought mine from Conn's.

Don't mean to highjack your thread but we seem to be looking for the same thing

I am considering purchasing one of the lowepro backpacks that can accomodate both a laptop and camera gear as they seem to tick all the boxes requirements wise. I checked ebay and while the prices are reasonable, the shipping costs are insane. Anyone have any experience with these bags and can ye suggest somewhere to purchase them?

I have a Lowepro-Fastpack-350-Backpack. I'm very pleased with it so far and I'd definately recommend it. I bought it as a bag for photo trips and for carry-on. The padded camera pouch is big enough to carry all my gear. 350D with battery back attached, 18-200 sigma (on the camera), 10-20 sigma, 70-300 sigma and a 50mm. Still space for a couple of filters, a memory card holder, a bag with loose bits and still has a nice big top compartment plus a couple of other pouches to carry general stuff. Yes it's bigger than my old Orion Treker but despite all that it's still not a huge bag by any means, I've ended up bringing it with me to work so now it's my every day backpack.

I bought the artic blue one, I thought it was much nicer than the black one :-)

i recently got myself a Lowepro Fastpack 250.. slightly smaller than the 350 version... so far it accomodates my gear alrite, plenty of space and quite comfortable too... i don't know thou why i didn't get the 350, ah well can always get it later should i need more space...
