You could try tell them that someone close to you is ill without being too specific and see how much info they would require to accept that reason. But what i'd do is just ask can i change the date of the flights. Usually once there is a space on the the same route as your original ticket on a different date they will allow you to change it for a fee. Granted you are paying extra for the flight but at least you don't have to pay for a full flight or go through the whole insurance process.

Right, I was on J1 for 3/4 months decided to come home 2 weeks early, changing flights was a nightmare because USIT/Go4Less/Sayit put you on LOWEST class possible with Delta. If you aren't flying with Delta just ring your j1 company (Go4, USIT etc) tell them you want to change, they'll find first available flight and you pay the fee and leave.

If you are with Delta, ring Delta they willl tell you its not possible to change because you are in a low class so tell them you don't mind doing a connecting flight and then they'll search (make sure you have credit on the phone because they take ages) and find a flight most likely through Atlanta or JFK.

I left the US two weeks early on my J1, had no problems whatsoever. I just booked new flights home and never even told USIT. It was worth the extra 100e or so (over the changing dates fee from USIT) to get direct flights home at a time that suited me and not to have to deal with a load of crap/restrictions from USIT.

Do you know how much USIT charge for arraging a new flight?? We flew with British Airways and i looged onto there website using my booking reference. there is a facility to change your flight on the website but for me it just said to contact my travel agent. Going to ring USIT on monday and see what they say. If i get a load of bull im just gonna book a one way flight home myself online

200e I think, a fair bit when you consider the strength of the euro. $300 + whatever value you place on convenience can get you a one way flight home from lots of places in the US to Ireland..
