    Urgently needed

Help needed with college project using Excel :confused::confused:

I have data for 20 years of employment figures - annual data.

So I have 20 rows of data.

Does anyone know how to smooth this data out to make it quarterly ?

    For example

If year 1 is 10000 and year 2 is 14000

How can I make excel say :

    row 1 10000
    row 2 11000
    row 3 12000
    row 4 13000
    row 5 14000

    Does anyone know?

Do you want me to explain further ?

    Thanks ! :D

ok in the example you've given, you're taking year 2 from year1 and dividing by 4. then adding this back to year 1, in quarters.

    eg 14 - 10 = 4, each quarter gets 1 (4 divided by 4 = 1) therefore your sequence is
    10,11,12,13,14

does that help? I don't want to hand you the answer as it's against the rules of the forum, plus you haven't shown any attempt yourself.

edit: actually we're not in the programming forum ;) mods, whatd'ya think? teach a man to fish or hand him the grilled fillet of salmon?

That is not what I'm looking for though - I'm looking for a moving average through all the numbers.

That is a simple average. A moving average is a weighted average (statistics)

    Thanks

well i was only going on your example which had 1/4 steps between your year 1 and 2 figures, if the entire sequence of 20 years has to be taken into account then maybe it's a different story. let me know if the sequence example below isn't what you need.

again all based off your example. after year 2 the yearly numbers are random, I just had to make some up. feel free to post your 20 years of data.
    Q2	Q3	Q4
    year1	10000	11000	12000	13000
    year2	14000	16500	19000	21500
    year3	24000	23250	22500	21750
    year4	21000	22500	24000	25500
    year5	27000	25750	24500	23250
    year6	22000	24000	26000	28000
    year7	30000	30500	31000	31500
    year8	32000

From EXCEL Help: Perform a statistical analysis
On the Tools menu, click Data Analysis.
    1. If Data Analysis is not available, load the Analysis ToolPak.
      1. On the Tools menu, click Add-Ins.
      2. In the Add-Ins available list, select the Analysis ToolPak box, and then click OK.
      3. If necessary, follow the instructions in the setup program.
    2. In the Data Analysis dialog box, click the name of the analysis tool you want to use, then click OK.
    3. In the dialog box for the tool you selected, set the analysis options you want.
