Duathlons are more winter/spring than summer.

Triathlon Ireland cover Duathlons and aquathons as well as triathlons. I wonder if I can get anyone on board for a quadathlon (swim, bike, kayak, run) e.g. http://www.britishquadrathlon.org.uk/index.php

adventure racing can be something similar but the bike and run are usually off-road and it is often a team effort. I'm not really a team player and I'm certainly not taking my beautiful carbon bike off-road if I can help it :-)

When I registered for the series it said that the 4th event was 5km/20km/3km but I haven't heard any confirmation since. I emailed the organisers but no reply. I'll try to remember to ask on Wednesday night (race 3).

Does anyone know if you can enter on the day? Not sure if we will be able to get there in time after work and don't want to waste an entry if we can't make it.

Also, I have found the maps before of the course etc but can't now. Everytime I go to Belpark site and click on the link to the www.dublintri.com to find them it only takes me to the home page and I can't find a link on that, well i find the Dublin tri link, but it only takes me back to the same place

    Is it just me?

They have the info on Google Groups - http://groups.google.com/group/dublin-duathlon?lnk=

You can enter on the day but get there as early as possible (by 7pm). Those pre-entered have to register by 7pm so that they know how many on-the-night slots are available.

The Google Group says that it is a long race in Aug.

Thanks for that info. So it is held near the Pope's Cross? Down that road? I had looked at all the maps and discovered I have already ridden some of the course previously and guess it wont' be hard to find on the night! Tnx

    Yes.
The Pope's Cross car park was jammed in June - it was a nice evening and it seems to be a hang-out spot.

You'll see the crowds near the start line too.

so the google groups page confirms that its a 5km run, 20km cycle, 2.5km run.

what kind of standard and numbers are there at these events? does it range to extremely good to very very poor? all i want is to not come last, so im kind of reassured when the site says that some people are on mountain bikes!

im a cyclist which will be my strong point, im reasonably fit but im terrible at running and will probably have to jog the 5km and 2.5km parts at a slow enough pace when compared to experienced triathletes. but i plan on working on my running a lot between not and aug 6th.

I didn't see anyone on mountain bikes the last time I was there. I showed up on a hybrid myself and was feeling a bit out of place next to all the fancy racers and TT bikes. Still managed to overtake lots of people on the cycle though :) (had a slow transition). Came in under 45 mins and the winning time was 36 mins so I was pleased enough given my slow transitions. Tomorrow night I'll use Lock laces and I've pimped out my bike a little with racing tyres etc. (Can't justify the expense of a tri bike to myself just yet, especially as I can't swim properly so can't partake in actual triathlons). The slowest time was 65 mins, so you shouldn't come last.

All that aside, I would say that regardless of how nervous you might feel, just do it :) It really is such good fun.

Stark isn't quite right. There will be plenty of flash bikes but there will be more mountain bikes and bikes with baskets than flash TT bikes.

Standard is very wide - from the top 10 being very fast all the way down the people effectively walking on the run.

    enjoy - you'll do grand.

I believe that the information on the google group is wrong

    From google group:
Event distances for May, June & July are
    2mile run - 1 lap <---- 1 run lap is 2.7km
    10mile cycle - 3 laps <---- 1 cycle lap is 4km, so that's 12kms, 7.5miles
    2 mile run - 1 lap

    Event distances for August are
    5km run - 2 laps
    20km cycle - 4 laps <---- 20kms is 5 laps
    2.5km run - 1 lap

    Course is here
I have checked the distances with www.mapmyrun.com which i believe from my experience is an accurate measuring tool.

Yeah that's right. A friend of mine had a GPS watch with him last time round and the shorter figures were the ones he got.

Duathlon distances for August race have been updated on the Dublin Duathlon google group.

Did everybody who registered on the night pay 29 yo yos?

I've done all these races so far and only paid 19 euro.
Its 10 euro for a day license but charging an extra 10 Euro seems a bit much.

I was lucky I had the extra tenner on me - never questioned the guy who i paid as everyone else seemed to pay it, well except one guy who walked off when he was told how much it was.

Unfortunately you do need a one day Triathlon Ireland license if you're not a member for the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭ChickenBalls

I understand about the license thats fine, its that I paid 9 euro entry for the last 2 races and this one I paid 19! It was no different to the others...

They must have made a mistake asking you for the money last time round. It was always €15 for pre-entry and €19 for entry on the night.

Ok, so yesterday went to watch my first Duathlon in Phoenix Park, friend of mine competing. I didnt really have any idea what to expect in terms of the sport as a live viewing sport - i've never been to an athletics meet and my only recollection of watching cycling was back when the Tour de France came to dublin, i was 16 or so and left so disappointed, didnt get a good perch (near the finish line) and all i saw was a blur of a sprint finish. Loved the sport back then pre-drugs scandals, Mario Cippollini was 1 of my sporting faves.

Yesterday came as a pleasant surprise. Went in with my girlfriend & friend, parked up and got to the Transition Area to wish him luck! A gorgeous evening in the Park after some earlier ominous showers certainly helped the event as a viewing spectacle. Also, with the distances being relative sprint distances there was always something interesting to watch.

So the men set off on their 1st lap, i was amazed that even after the 1st Lap there was a huge gap between the 1st 3 and the rest, 50 metres+ at least. Mark was tagged on to the back of that leading group, although didnt look all that comfortable. Of all the hazards facing Triathletes, i never thought "Deer Stampede" would be 1 of them but that's exactly what happened!! Just as they were coming towards the end of the 1st Lap, the deers decided to make their move. Looked like it could ensue in a game of Chicken between the athletes and deer lol.

The ladies set off shortly after the men, even from the outset there was 1 girl who looked head n shoulders better than the others. Didnt quite catch the name but she was a class act. Coming to the end of the mens 1st cycle lap,it was still the 3 of them in a breakaway, all within touching distance. Some of the bikes are unbelievable machines, i know they're expensive pieces of kit but they look the business. Had to feel sorry for the fun/leisurely athletes on their mountain bikes at the back of the field!!

Coming to the end of the last cycle lap, the leader had opened up a decisive advantage. His cycling looked extremely powerful, big strong man pumping it out. I'd say he had maybe 35 metres on the guy in 2nd, and extended that advantage on the final run lap to win very well. Mark started the final lap in 3rd place maybe 100 metres behind the leaders, with 2 chasing him. He still didnt look that comfortable but pushed it out to the end and finished i think 4th/5th in around 36 mins (i think). Wasn't a happy camper afterwards so i left him to it and hit the road!

All in all, i'd definitely go watch more races. I think having nice weather certainly made a big difference, i'm not so sure i'd be as keen to go out in buckets of rain to watch it!! Had a lot of fun though. I left so impressed with the dedication and committment of the athletes. Inspiring stuff. As someone with a basic level of fitness currently, it was an eye-opener to see these guys and girls pushing it to the limit. I'd love to compete myself some day, so i might just have to clear out my schedule to get myself fit over the next year or so!!

As a pure and utter beginner to running, never mind Dualathons, i was looking at the race on the 6th of august in the pheonix park and thinking, i might like to give this a go. I did the Adidas running series last year, as a goal for loosing weight, and getting into shape. (still getting there)

I was gogin to run the 5 mile on saturday just gone, but my heel was playing up so i didn;t run it.

I don;t have a fancy bike, just a bog standard mountain bike, 2 miles for me would be in around the 16 minute mark, im guessing 10 mile cycle would be around 30 mins?

so looking at a time of around 60 - 65 minutes, i don;t mind finishing last, it an achievement for me to get out and do somethign like this to be honest.

Or would i be making a "holy show" of myself ?

It took me about 22 mins to cycle the 12km last time round on a hybrid (it was 12km as opposed to the 10 miles mentioned on the website). Any mountain bikers I saw were much slower; I lapped a good few of them. It's going to be a 20km cycle in August. The running distances will be 5.4km for the first run and 2.7km for the second run (they were 2.7km each the last time, the 2 miles quoted on the website was incorrect).
