I would like to thank the students who help support the Felix Valencia Seminar in Ireland and the week long training sessions. The event was attended with students not only from Ireland, but UK, Finland and Russia. I would like to especially thank Robert Scott and the Ballymena club and Antonio Salveta of the Maynooth Martial Arts Club and Mark Porter of Wexford mma for help supporting and help making the event a great success.

Felix Valencia provided a mind blowing experience over the week, with not only training in Eskrima, but Muay Thai, Silat, Boxing, Lua, Grappling and Groundwork. His open mindness to blend combat elements in all 4 ranges of combat has allow him to develop a very complete art. He ability to make learning very easy is a credit to him, and we all really enjoy the experience. It was one of the best weeks of my life and enjoy every minute of it.

Felix has appointed our group as Representatives of his style and we hope over the coming months help to establish Valencia Lameco Eskrima in different locations in Ireland. If you interested in setting up training groups or interested in attending future workshops than send me a PM.

We are also with the help of Felix are organising the European Knife Fighting Championships in Dublin 2009. This is the sporting version of the art  and the event will be open to people outside of Eskrima. We have already interest from 9 countries wanting to take part and will have teams from outside of Europe also attending. Trials and training for taking part in "Team Ireland" will start in late Autumn.

was wondering about this myself. Is it something similar to what the dog brothers do, except with training/shock knives?

    Hi

Felix has took part and train a number of people in the dog brother events. The event he working to organised is with training blades and is a scoring system. It will not be done with shock knives. It's going to be fun exciting event, where students of different styles of knife systems can test their skills, and systems. No one is going to get hurt (except maybe pride:rolleyes:)
It will also help promote south east asian events in Ireland and we already talking to a t.v company which may make a programe about the event and a group of Irish students training for the event.

Felix will also be taking and training some of our guys who want to go over and compete in the more hardcore dog brothers events.

will it be full contact like the dog brothers, or more of a semi-contact affair

All the fighters must wear full protection,(Head/ forarms/ and hand) so you can go as fast or as hard as you want, however at this event, there will be no Punching / Kicking. There will be 2 x 1 minute rounds, 3 scoring ranges. There are a few items to be finalise about scoring for multiple slashes, but this is still very early days and we have to talk to other countries about this and get a final scoring system, which is fair to all

sounds very interesting, but would you not push for punching and kicking as well.

on another note, can you clinch, disarm or go to the ground

Insurance would be the big problem here, with a large event, start adding in punching and kicking with blade and its a very scary combination. Safety of the fighters is my main goal. Yes you can disarm your opponent , If the system your learning teaches you to clinch and go to the ground with the knife than you can try that. All the rules as I said before are to be finalised, and a national team for the event has to be arranged so there a lot of work to be done. The event is plan for London in 2010, so maybe punching and kicking may come in to it then.

My comment was related to the press you are presumably going to get from holding a "knifefighting Championship". I really feel like you are asking for trouble on this one.

Congratz on the successful workshop Liam.

Can you elaborate on how a "hit" is scored with a knife? Is it judged by a referree, does it leave a mark? What sort of blades do you use? small daggers or big sabers?

    Thanks,
    Col

    A great event all round.
The fact that we managed to get a fighter of Felix's calibre to take a chance and come over to ireland in itself is a great achievement. I had the opportunity to train with Felix at the seminar and (sat, sun) and this week (tues, wed, thurs,) and I can safely say that it was one of the best learning experiences I have had to date. I learned a lot. I also had the opportunity to spar with Felix on several occasions which was a real eye opener and an honour. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Liam for organising this event as without him we would not have had this incredible opportunity. I would also like to extend my thanks to him for his undying commitment to the Beautiful and Deadly art of Pukalan Cimande Pusaka.

    Hi Colm

    Many thanks

The scoring is marked by 3 judges, so the referree will look after the safety of the fighters. The training blades (small) will be design to leave a colour mark, but mostly the scoring will be done when a fighter strikes one of the scoring zones. At the end of each contest the referree will add up the score of the three judges and the winner is the person with highest score. Felix Valencia is in the front line of developing this format of sporting competition. We also planing to have a stick and shield event at a later date which will envolve grappling aspects as well.

Felix demo this type of sparring at the seminar and with good protection equipment is very safe and was great craic. It develops good timing, speed, footwork and awareness.

    Thanks Liam,

I suppose it's premature to ask but any youtube vids of this style of comp? (maybe Felix has some prototype matches up)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭columok

Wow Liam that sounds really exciting. Do you have any clips of something similar? It sounds pretty impressive. Would be interested to see how the absence of punches and kicks/knees affects people's posture and willingness to engage. I guess people would have less fear of the knife and more fear of a knee. What do the knives look like? Magic Marker? Would scoring on the hands constitute losing the use of that hand or is it points only?

Sounds like every one had fun at the course.Good work on haven some one over who, opened up peoples eyes to S.E.Asian arts.....happy days. All the best with the sport stuff too,as I've seen people even pushen sport Krabbi Krabong now ;) not sure how some of it works ?

As blade stuff ,be it long or short blade.........is always hard to judge who won and not being able to kick...makes it harder but as you say with insurance and what have you which normaly takes all the fun away...it sounds interesting.

Wishing you all the best with it..........J & the WaliSongo/Satria group

    Hi Liam,

Thanks for making us feel so welcome at the event and taking such good care of us. We learned a lot and I'm so glad to have made so many new friends from your clubs.

For the sake of accuracy (SU/C&S types read these boards and the good press goes a long way toward capitation for our club), our proper club name is NUI Maynooth Self-Defence and the other instructor, Darryl Murray, was there alongside me.
Thanks again for everything and please do stay in touch!

    Train hard, fight easy,

    Tony

    Hello Liam,
Mark Porter hasnt shut up about the course since he returned. He was incredible impressed and that takes a lot!
He was very impressed with how easily the knife/weapons element can be incorporated into any open system.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thanks!!!

    Hi

Thats great to hear, thx. Felix was fantastic and we're looking forward to bringing him back over next year. At the moment we setting up training groups in Ireland. Mark has spoke to me about setting up one in Wexford, so people in south east have a place to learn Lameco Eskrima. I hope to work with Mark over the coming months in getting the group up and running in wexford and look forward to meeting up with you guys.

Mark is a really talent teacher and you guys are lucky to have someone like him teaching you. BTW some of our guys are planing to make it down to the steve morris seminar that you guys are hosting, Mark was telling us some of the stories about him, should be a good day out.

We looking forward to having you down for both the Steve Morris gig and the eskrima. We have had a lot of interest for the eskrima and the knife elements from people outside of the club too.I think it appeals to a broader range of people from different backgrounds. I believe we could have the makings of an interesting and entertaing class!

    Good times!
