If done properly and priced competitively, this could be very good indeed. With the ability to swap out the hard-drive for a really big one it wouldcould be a great service.

However, there is one thing that makes me not so thrilled about it(didn't read article fully so may have been addressed there). What sort of copying permission are people going to have over the movies. In other words, if my HDD in my ps3 is filling up, can I transfere films to another storage medium and free up space.

This would be the deal brreaker in using this serivice for me.

    Still good news though.

Your right about trouble copying movies. but i think this is a rental service so you just get to watch the movie once then it removes itself.

Now what will the download file size be?

People forget that Ireland is a long way behind other countries for speed of download and caps on users.

Sony are also not going to shoot themselves in the foot, by making BD redundant so early

That's a good point about them not making the file size too small and rendering blu-ray sort of unnecessary and the broadband thing.

It depends on how they choose to let us download the stuff, if they had good servers they may get reasonable speeds and our broadband is not that bad. As long as a file size was no bigger than a standard DVD9 it would be ok I suppose. But then there's the problem about makin Blu-ray pointless...

On closer inspection - FCUK you sony;) how dare you make our lives complicated with the curse of choice;)

If its only going to be a rental service i wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. They will charge a few euro for each film(i would think that anything less that 5 would be a bit pointless) at that rate, i'd rather buy blu-rays off the net of dvds. you pay a bit more but have the actuall disc, can watch on more than one machine and can watch again.

From what I've read, you can rent movies in HD, and buy them in SD.

That makes sense. If you want to buy a movie in HD, you're going to want the blu-ray, as it offers better quality than a download.

For me the two crucial things are: library and price.

So far only Sony Pictures have signed up, so it's not going to be a great selection unless they get other studios on board.

As for price... anything more than 4-5 euro for a 24hr rental would really be pushing it.

The 360 does have this and it has quite a good selection of movies.

It would take about 12 hours at @ 200kb/s to download a dvd9 size, file, thats far too long. Especially seeing as the majority of people here can only download at 120kb/s (1meg line) . It would more than likely be a compressed type of format(like avi) and come in around the 1gb size
