The curse of the UPC '500' channels strikes again.

Performance (UPC 511 Dublin) is to cease at midnight on the 30th June.

So thats 503 UKTV Bright Ideas, 506 ABC1 , 510 M+M and now 511.......with nothing to replace them ! what chance FTV 502 the next to go...although knowing UPC probably lose all the discovery channels before that...

Sky Arts would be a good replacement

The question is will they bother to replace it? It may not have been popular (maybe it was?) but it was still a channel.

i hope they replace it with a good channel

    like fx

Very true, realise its going on all platforms, but another channel gone. I really think that whole 500 block needs rethinking. Bravo and Discovery channels should really be down in the 100s with the other entertainment channels. Buzz TV should move up into the 500s etc.

They must be getting paid for 'BuzzTV' I don't see how else it gets such a good slot. Speaking of, the other day I spotted something classed as drama on Buzz, I flicked over and it was an infomercial.

They'd want to start offering real channels instead of that rubbish. While I've grown to love their BB again (12MB) their decreasing channel line up is getting annoying. They haven't added a real channel (BuzzTV isn't one) in years but several have dropped. If I could only get a satellite dish...

What channels would you like to see added?. Anytime I look at sky in a friend house, I've always see lots of channel but a hell of alot of crap. Nothing really I'd be crazy on. What am I missing out on.

Sky Arts would be great. But that won't happen. A couple more filum channels would be nice.

    Mike.

FX off the top of my head, I'd say there are some other decent entertainment channels. There are a couple of good UKTV ones, a few more movie channels. Alternatively something new. I don't think UPC should be trying to copy sky, they should be offering something different / better. Perhaps this isn't feasible but it doesn't take a genius to work out that BuzzTV is rubbish and obviously customers will think this where as adding a couple of movie / entertainment channels is what people want.

Crime & Investigation would be nice too..

Yeah Buzz TV must be paying them. They better be anyway. Because if they're carrying this bull for FREE? I tell you...

But seriously. There's so many things wrong with the way things are lined up.

Some of them are petty, but they are still things that Sky don't have an issue with, to name a few:
    1) Buzz TV - It's very existance is an insult to television and intelligence
    2) The Discovery channels should be all together
    3) What's going on with MTV One+1 being marked "MTV R"?
    4) MTV One still called "MTV", and (extremely petty now) MTV Two still called "MTV2"
    5) Cartoon Network Too called Toonami still (I think)
    6) There's like nothing in the 500s now. They should merge them with the other categories (probably 100s) and move the rest down 100. Some channels never belonged there anyway (e.g. though there wasn't much on it, ABC1 would've been much more suited to 100s)
    7) There are channels from some companies, where they show nearly every channel of theirs, but then ommit one or two. They're not exactly running short on space - e.g. Trouble, Bravo 2 and Living 2 (have every other Virgin Media Television channel), MTV R (have every other MTV UK &Ireland channel) Channel 4+1 (every other Channel 4 channel is there).

The channels in 7) might not add very much since they mostly (but not always) repeat stuff on other channels, but they'd be a lot better than "Buzz". When they start running out of channel space, then they have an excuse not to have them.

You're right there is a lot of crap, but Sky have capacity for more channels: good and bad.

e.g. Trouble, Bravo 2 and Living 2 (have every other Virgin Media Television channel)

Add Challenge to the Virgin Media list, they don't have that either.

Ok maybe the Virgin Media wasn't the best example. But they had no excuse not to have every one of them when it was NTL:Telewest who owned the network, since they shared the same parent then.

    Sad news indeed.
Although recently when flicking through the channels, All that is on Performance these days is old European classical music concert footage.
Gone are the Pop Concerts (Tory Amos, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney etc) and the excellent Inside the Actors Studio.

They were completely seperate networks though. With that terminology I could say the same about Sky Italia and Sky UK

I think this channel may be replacing it:

    http://www.performance-channel.com/mainstreet/

Not heard of that before. Schedule looks decent.

Pity 'cause the line up is top notch plus it's in HD too which kinda takes the edge off the argument being express on another thread that the sky HD line up is cr*p

    http://www.skyarts.co.uk/

Wonder is there anyway of influencing UPC......then again probably not

If I'm not mistaken part of BSkyB is public? Whereas only Sky Italia is a complete subsidiary of News Corp. But anyway, if it makes that much of a difference fine. I'll withdraw the Virgin Media argument (or at least that part of it). The other two still stand.

If http://www.performance-channel.com/mainstreet/ does pop up, it looks like a carbon copy of the earlier P channel, I was going to say dull and mainstream but then I glimpsed Deep Purple at Montreux in the listings so I may have to rethink that!

    Mike.

No Mainstream was like Performance2. It's where all newer music related shows moved to. It's been around for a while. Both channel should be closing next month.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 82 ✭✭abraxas01

think you're mistaken there. Performance is ceasing, but Mainstreet will continue on.

OH, then I wonder if we'll get mainstreet????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 529 ✭✭✭Pat Gleeson

Both channel should be closing next month.

The Sky EPG has Performance closing at 6am tomorrow, whilst Mainstreet still has programmes up to the 7th at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,358 ✭✭✭dunworth1

the epg on the dvr says the channel will cease at 6.00am

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 82 ✭✭abraxas01

checked and Mainstreet is now playing out. EPG still says channel will cease broadcasting, but if they've gone to the bother of switching to Mainstreet, suspect this just means they don't have the EPG info yet.

Yeah there is a lot of crap on Sky
But it would be good if UPC could add these

News: France 24 international news, Al Jazeera English,

Some science channels like NASA TV,
    some + 1 channels, National Geographic +1 , Discovery Science +1

    Some more movie channels
Sky Box Office, Fox Movie Channel, Hallmark Movie Channel

    ITV 2, 3, 4, We used to have ITV3

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 82 ✭✭abraxas01

checked again and message about channel ending has now been replaced with proper EPG data, so looks like we'll be getting Mainstreet going forward.

Nah, +1 channels are a waste of bandwidth, something UPC are lacking in at least until analogue is switched off.

The introduction of DVRs pretty much makes them redundant anyway.
