over the past few weeks i have been in the process of upgrading my laptop.
i got the screen and keypad replaced under warrenty, and i also upgraded the ram to 2gb, and have a bluetooth module on the way.

my next thing is to upgrade the harddrive to something like 160gb or 250gb.

i have a dell inspiron 6000, and i dont know what type harddrive i have, all i know is its 80gb, well 69gb in reality.

so i dont know where to start looking for an upgraded hard drive as i need to know what i can replace it with.

    thanks.

After a spot of searching, it takes an ATA/IDE drive. It should have come with a 4,200 rpm drive. It would be good to be for a 5,400 rpm drive for a bit of a performance boost mind.

thanks mate, that 250gb one looks ok value?
is it a big job or messy proceedure to transfer everything from your old HD to the new HD?
i have an external 250gb HD around to aid with the transfer too.

You could try IT Direct on Parliment St, Dublin...WD HD Scorpio 250GB 2.5" ATA 5400rpm 8MB for €118.59

    250gb @ 5400rpm = 112 dollars

You'll have to install windows on it so it isn't the easiest thing in the world to install.

You could create an image of your Windows partition and restore it to the new drive (could do with an external caddy/case for a 2.5" ATA/IDE drive in this case) and imaging software (Norton Ghost, PartImage, Acronis True Image).

Make sure the one you have is not a 44 pin IDE instead of the standard 40 pin IDE. I had problems with that before with an inspiron 6000.

Also make sure that your BIOS can recognise 250GB - I've an Inspiron 6000 also and have the latest BIOS version but I believe (from the Dell support forum) that it can take a max of 120GB.
