me and my funny accent

25-06-2008 4:47pm#1I was trying to enquire about the water supply to my apartment block from the operators at a water supply company this afternoon. The first operator and I could not understand each other. She transferred me to her colleague after 30 secs or so of trying. The second operator also had problems understanding me but she was more patient. But when she repeated some of the questions, I heard a few gals laughing in the background. Also a couple of laughs when she confirmed my name (not English) I told this operator that I apologise for my accent and asked her to bear with me. She was quite taken aback.
I got an Asian accent cos I am Asian. I worked in Australia and US for a few years and have never had problems except I was being asked to speak slowly:p For the last 19 mths in Ireland, almost everyone I came across has been really nice and friendly. In fact, I commented a couple days ago to my workmates that I really love the Irish culture. So friendly and laidback with a wicked sense of humour:D They were very flattered. But it's really an isolated incident like this make the others look bad

call centers for this country are all in forgien countries

well, the 2 operators had Irish accent. it has to be in ireland. btw i love irish accent

dont get me wrong, i am not one of those foreigners who come into this country and accuse everyone of being racist to get my way. in fact, i told my workmates that the irish are too laidback to be taken advantage of. i make fun about my skin colour and accent all the time. everytime, my colleagues trying to give me assignments, i would say "me no understand english, me chinese" they crack up everytime
