    Hi all,
as part of a small research project I have been replying to a few 419 spam emails. Its amazing how the scammers reply and how convincing they are. Even when you ask them for proof of their claims they are very genuine and I can easily see how people might be tempted.

Its also funny after a few emails have been exchanged if you say something like "I'm very interested in your proposal, and I'm willing to send personal and bank details if you have not sent this email to anyone else ... have you sent this to anyone else or just me?".

So has anyone here ever replied to spam, or has anyone ever fallen for a spam scam?

Wanted to get some emails and was following the guide on the site they said enter this into google to find guestbooks and then you'll find scammers

    google spits out this yolk.

Below is an example of one of the ongoing conversations which we are just about finished with. I was using a hotmail account, and my name is not Joseph btw :D I've also xxx'ed out some dates and other information for research reasons.

Its interesting the way he picked up my email address originally from a post on boards years ago when I was doing my masters!!!

Anyone interested in his proposal please feel free to email him. He was one of the more genuine ones!!!

    Williams,
the link you have provided is not an "internet business directory" ... it is an discussion board on the topic of software development. Do you expect me to believe you picked my email address from a 4 year old post on a software development internet discussion board?

I am not interested in your proposal as you have obviously lied to me. I will not be responding to you again.

    not really.

Lets see what happens when I google "@hotmail.com", and for a bit of brevity lets add "boards.ie" to the search..

Really all it takes is the right Bot, doing a google-based search for email prefixes to generate a list of victims.

Man I love this kind of stuff. Can anyone else not read his emails without putting on an African accent in their head?

You should take it one step further and give him the Bank account number and sort code from the end of your ESB bill or something and see what happens!

It's great fun if you've nothing to do for a while. Gmail's extra vigilant spam filters have curtailed my pleasure in recent times though.

Last one I had was where I applied for a "job" cashing cheques for an arts dealer in New York, very snazzy. Strangely, they wanted me to send the money by Western Union to Italy though. After telling the guy my address was on Murder Lane, Co Ballybongbong, he claimed to have sent me a cheque. I would dearly love to have contacted An Post to see if they had any letters addressed to there. He went away after that.

I did get a mail a few weeks later though from a white South-African nurse, living in Nigeria, professing her un-dieing love for me though.
