My hair is in bad condition after the years and years of torture I put it through with loads of peroxide. I'm now a redhead and have been trying to take better care of it, but my hair is refusing to grow past my shoulders. Ive started using nicky clarke heat protector, and tres semme leave in conditioner, but by hair goes limp and greasy after one day! Ive tried even just spraying away from the root, but that doesnt seem to help.
Anybody got any recommendations? I was also thinking of buying supplements in the health shop that encourage hair to grow, but are they a load of crap?

Hey, me I am a huge fan of Aussie and Redkin. I've used treseeme as well and didn't find it great. My hair was in terrible condition and was told by my hairdresser that I would have to start looking after it so my regime now is...

    Aussie Shampoo
    Aussie 3 minute miracle condition
Redken spray in condition for keeping colour (brown bottle)
Redken extreme anti snap (blue bottle)
    Aussie leave in condition spray

My hair is in way better quality now and whereas as before my hair was dry and brittle and had slip ends, now it is so much better and nearly have no slip ends!!

Lush do a great moisture mask called H'Suan Wen Hua (link: http://www.lush.co.uk/products/HSuan_Wen_Hua_1986.aspx) I find it brilliant, you just out it in dry hair for about 20 mins and thenw ash your hair normally. Its about 15euro, which is a bit expensive but it really is very good and the pot will last you ages!
I love Aussie products aswell, their shampoos and conditioners are great.
If your hair is limp and greasy after using a leave-in-conditioner maybe dont use it, or use only a tiny bit. Sometimes those leave-in conditoners and serums only really suit thicker hair and make thinner hair look straggly and greasy.

I would recommend Evening Primrose Oil for stimulating growth. It will take a month or 2 to see the difference.

I would suggest Kerastase Force Intense.

I found it brilliant. My hair was dyed off my head and like you it wouldnt grow and kept snapping on me.

I used this stuff and within weeks the change was unreal...

    Here is a link i found http://www.lookfantastic.com/hair/kerastase/resistance/kerastase-forcintense.html

They cost around €35 in Peter Marks but believe me its worth it.

EDIT: Forgot to add, that I leave this on for at least 60mins. Wrap your head in a warm towel, or cling film - Peter marks told me this is actually better and then wash out after the hour.

Thanks everyone, Ive decided to try the Kerastase one, it might be a bit pricey, but I found some which are a bit cheaper on ebay. :D

I'm definitley going to buy some Aussie shampoo as well.

Yea I use the 3 minute miracle stuff in between using the force intense.

How much did you get it for on ebay?

There is a special in Tesco at the moment on Aussie products - 33% off - if that helps

Also I have thick hair so that is prob why leave in conditioners are ok for me!

You should be using Salon standard stuff, especially if you use lots of heat & colour.
    I find Redken great,

Use products which contains Keratin (hairs natural strenghtner) and also lots of proteins to try restore the lost nourishment.

The cheap stuff only softens the outer layer of your hair, leaving it feeling smooth but not actually doing any good for the damage done inside the Hair shaft.
The cheaper products generally contain Silicon (there is 2 types of) and its the one which gradually does more harm than good. Also, they generally contain lots of S.L.S (chemical) which is what mechanics would use to strip the floors... :o

Personally, if you are gonna spend so much on getting the hair looking fab, lovely cut & colour you really should spend the lil extra to maintain its health and strenght...

o ya 4got bout heat protection, i generally dnt use much heat in styling my hair. 4got 2 mention that a friend of mine who is a hairdresser brought me out a few salon treatments which i left in overnight at times but i think it can b a bit much if over used. but the coconut oil condition kept it completely tangle free after i had finished wit da treatments. sallys, boots and superdrug offer some of these treatments i think if u cant get them from a hairdressers supplies. da hairdressers in limerick recommend pantene ice shine for coloured hair if you wash it regularly and loreal colour mask sometimes if thats any good 2 u...

da hairdressers in limerick recommend pantene ice shine for coloured hair if you wash it regularly

 pantene is riddled with SLS and silicon -- whatever hairdresser told you that should be gettin the P45.. no hairdresser would ever recommend shop stuff IF they know their stuff about chemicals & composition..

I got a great tip that if your hair feels like its about to snap from dryness rinse your hair with milk.. It's full of protein and will repair your hair.

Also, I love the nice n' easy colour seal gloss conditioner.. you usually get it with the colour but I think you can buy it on it's own..

keratase didnt work for me, i ws expecting miracles from it but i found loreal intensive repair, available in salons better. nettle tea promotes heair growth too, i even put it through my roots sometimes. and if you have curly hair curl rock leave in conditioning cream is amazing, especially for frizzy hair, out it on very wet hair

Would rinsing your hair with milk not make your hair really smelly? I detest the smell of milk!!

Thats where the wonder of shampoo and conditioner comes in handy.. :pac:

So at what stage do you start rinsing your hair with milk then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,062 ✭✭✭all the stars

well thats what they say 2 customers who cant get the salon stuff, thats what the girls in the belissimo say.
Well, as a salon they selected a range of professional products they should believe in to sell to customers, and it seems perhaps they aren't aware of the rubbish they are advising people to use. I guess people expect their hairdressers to know their stuff and advise them correctly, however there are plenty of bad hairdressers in the world.. Maybe their product knowledge is quite limited...
i find if u use it alot ur hair tends 2 get greasier quicker.
That would be the silicon i mentioned earlier... :)
can i ask you wat u wud do if ur tryin 2 make ur hair a lighter colour quickly? i had it stripped afew times, da crazy colours didnt cum out after 3 goes! theyre still not out.. and dyed it dark when im originally fair. no hairdresser can get da crazy colours outta my hair at all

 Lord... thats not good... Who-ever stipped your hair that many times should be sacked!
I imagine your hair is damaged pretty badly inside after that.. Crazy colours really stain your hair very badly, i've used them mself, to lift the colours i bought a deep clensing shampoo from Toni & Guy which helped lift if a bit.. Then it was just wait it out really, i know planty of people suggest using Head & Shoulders to take out colour (though generally i would neveer suggest using it as it is very hard on the scalp..) Maybe that might work for you? :)

I've used crazy colour in my hair, the pink washed out fine, the black didn't, and I had to wait for it to grow out, it wasnt that bad cause it was underneath. I didn't realise it was so bad for your hair, I wont be using that again in a hurry.

You should definitely be using a protein treatment every two weeks to get your hair in good condition and strong again.

I use hair mayonnaise (google it) and after just one application - wash hair, condition, then put hair mayonnaise in and wrap in cling film for about an hour - my hair was much stronger (less breakage).

    I highly recommend it! :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 191 ✭✭do you love it?

i use kerastase shampoo, conditioner and treatment, i really cant fault them! theyre fab.
be careful with ebay, some sellers have been known to mix a lesser product with the kerastase, or water it down.
you wont know if its the real deal unless you have bought it from a hair salon first.

Also, bumble and bumble do a great tonic full of vitamins and minerals! think its about 20 bops and it detangles your hair!
