Looking for a job and having no luck

    Hi,

I just finished my Leaving and I'm looking for a job. Just looking to do anything really, was initially looking for full-time but I will go for part-time. Over the last week I've handed out around 60 C.V.'s into Various shops in Town, Dundrum Town Centre, Nutgrove SC, Churchtown, Rathfarnham Village, Templeogue Village, etc. I haven't heard back from anyone at all. I have previous experience (worked in supermarkets for the last 2 summers) so I don't know what else to do?

Can anyone give me any advice as to what else I can do to get a job?

You could try handing CVs out to the various companies in Sandyford Industrial Estate, maybe? There may be jobs in the warehouses and offices there.

Perhaps post your CV and let me people give you a few pointers?

Yeah it might be worth having your CV reviewed... 60 CV's and no response may suggest it can be improved. 40 and no responses is quite normal, at least for me :p 60 would concern me

its probably not a good time to be posting CVs to retailers etc as they would have their weekend staff doing extra hours at the moment as a lot of weekend staff are students and need the extra work in summer. retailers will leave their recruitment until later in the summer so August, September would be a good time. Large retailers will be looking at their christmas recruitment then.
I know that doesnt help you now, but may explain why you arent getting any responses. I am a retail Manager and I am not even looking at CVs at the moment, but I know I may need to look in August September time

by the sounds of it you are just handing in C.V's like confetti.....sometimes works, sometimes doesn;t....

have you tried going through agencies and job websites? also don;t forget FAS - they have various jobs - you can go into the local office and they will assist with job hunt as well.....

when going into stores to ask for work it may be best to ask for the manager (or whomever is responsible for employement) - they could tell you if anything available so at least you aren;t wasting your time with them

bottom line is to persevere.....don't get down and keep going...something will come up!

OP, would you consider a childminding job? With children off school and parents working, there are probably a lot of openings for looking after older schoolage children. It would be long hours and you would have to be enthusiastic, but it might be worth considering if there are no vacancies anywhere else. My mother-in-law normally minds my 2 older children after school, but fulltime for 3 days a week didn't suit her. Then a relation who is after completing fifth year suggested he mind them - he too had been actively trying to find Summer work, and I was having sleepless nights as to how I was going to manage with the children over the Summer hols! I trust him completely and the children know him and love him to bits - and even better he takes no nonsense from them!
It might be worth your while placing an ad in your local newsagent.
But then again, either it is or it isn't for you!

Here's a directory of the companies in the industrial estate: http://www.sandyford.com/company_locator/index.html

Well worth checking out in my experience, OP.

Stop and think. You want to work. Well there are a ton of ads in every FAS office and in the evening herald. I would expect most of the people in or around the industrial estate would want some sort of experience that you don't have any of. Why are you not going to college or some course this Sept/ Oct ? Are if you are you are then only looking for summer work. There's always work in Pubs. I would be in FAS every day if I was you getting all the news jobs and be the first to ring.

Problem with this time of year is the number of students / school leavers who are looking for work.

Approx. 60,000 school leavers + excess 100,000 students available for flexi time working from June every year. Ideally you should have been looking for part-time work last summer, take a break for leaving cert studies from xmas and hope the same employer will give you hours after leaving cert.

Check out people like masterchefs who do bars & catering for events and sports grounds, look to where public transport goes and check those areas.

If Kildare town is easy to get to (train) the shops in the outlets have openings www.kildarevillage.com

In reality you are probably too late to get anything substantial for the summer, but come end August / Early september all the retailers will need replacements for all the students they've had.

I am going to college in September, though I want to keep working part-time while I am in College. Where is the nearest Fas Office around Dundrum, Rathfarnham?

in my experiance it's best to ask to speek to the manager when you go in to the shop that your looking for work in - otherwise the meployees will just throw it under the desc and forget about. i've seen it done so many times before . and at least you'll get a chance to meet the manager in person and make more of an impresion on them :)
    good luck

You need to speak to the manager in the shops. I worked for a while in a book shop, and anytime anyone handed in a CV it went nowhere unless it was handed direct to the manager.

This is what I would do -

    1. Dress up nicely.
    2. Make a plan of which shops you are going to contact.
    3. Write up a cover letter tailored specifically for each shop/office. This means you mention their name in the letter and somehow, if possible, make it seem like you are targeting them for a reason.
    4. Go into each shop and locate the manager. Don't ask to speak to her as the staff have probably already been warned to get rid of people looking for jobs.
    5. Introduce yourself to the manager and hand her your CV with your cover letter on top. Ask her if she is currently hiring or plans to currently hire someone. If she says yes, bingo. If she says no, ask her to consider you if anything comes up in the future.

In my opinion, doing the above is giving it your best shot, so even if you can't get a job, you knows its not because you screwed up.

    Good luck.
