Hey folks. I was wondering if anyone could set my mind at ease. I'm getting married on August 11th and we're leaving the next morning for the US. Is the fact that my passport will still be in my maiden name gonna be a problem? I know US immigration is a bit nuts - will I need proof of marriage? Or is my mum panicing me for nothing? :)

    Do you mean maiden name?

Provided that the name on your ticket and the name on your passport are the same, there's no problem.

Your name isn't legally changed the second you get married. You have to go and physically change your name afterwards.

Cool thanks Seamus, should be grand then.

I used to work for a tour operator who made almost as much money from charging newlyweds for new tickets as they did from selling insurance - holiday would be booked in married name, passport in maiden name, £10 re-print charge. As Seamus said, once the name on the ticket is the same as the passport, no problem.

So himself booked the flights 10 minutes before I spoke to him. Guess what name he used  Inevitable. :) But at least we'll be changing them now and not at the airport.

E-bookers say we can't change the name. And the tickets are non-refundable. 1,200 euros down the drain! *cries* we can't afford this!

    *edit*
Just off the phone to Delta themselves - if we bring "government proof of marriage" we'll be fine. Thank god!

Why don't you get a passport in your married name before you get married?

I have a UK passport so not sure if Irish ones are the same but we got married in May 05 and I had my married name passport in my hands in April 05...I just had to fill out the renewal paperwork and the priest signed an additional form to say he would be marrying us on x date and sent it in to the passport office and they issued me with my new passport.

You have to pay to change the passport anyway so why not save yourself a name change charge?

The Passport Office in Ireland will only issue a passport in the married name using the civil marriage cert as proof of the marriage, which can't be issued prior to the wedding.

My wife went on holidays with maiden name passport for over a year. Needed a marriage cert to show immigration on a holiday to new york the following spring but no hassle just paper work (pre 9/11 though)

2 years on I'm finally planning to change mine - does anyone know if I double barrell it on my passpost can I then fly with ticket in either name?? Similarly if I change my name in my bank (fully) and have it double-barrelled on my passport will they accept cheques made out to me in my old name? Any thoughts welcome.... Ta.

Some airlines are sticky when it comes to names. I'd call them to check out what their policy is. You should get your passport/bank details done in the name you use regularly. So if you're going double-barrelled, stick with double-barrelled for everything and save the confusion. If you plan on only using one surname, then stick to that for everything. Believe me, it makes life less awkward.

the name on the ticket must match exactly the name on the passport.

Not true. I got married last year, and I got a new passport issued in my married name two months before the wedding. I just had to submit a copy of my letter from the registrar, and a letter from the priest who was marrying us to prove that the marriage was going ahead. However, the passport office told me that it would be illegal to travel on the passport until after the wedding so that's something to keep in mind.

The Passport Office will no longer issue a passpot unless you have the civil marriage cert. They used to up until last year but this has since stopped.

Fair enough. The reason I jumped to the conclusion you were wrong was because lots of people on internet forums told me it definitely couldn't be done last year either, and it was only when I phoned the Passport office directly that I found out it could. Sorry if the rules have changed in the meantime and I'm the one giving false information this time!! :)

No prob aniascor! It was standard practice up until mid of last year to accept the letter from the priest, so you were right about that.

ou could change your name by deed poll and then get a passport. No marriage cert needed
