There is no exact limit. The guideline is an amount for personal use, and I am told that Customs and Excise think that about 90 bottles of wine is reasonable for one person -- but you have an arguable case if you bring a bit more.

I have never had a problem with wine, and I have exceeded the 90 bottles a few times, and been inspected (possibly because I travel solo, but maybe I just look dodgy). They seem far more interested in tobacco.

If you are coming through Cherbourg, the Normandie Wine Warehouse is a good place to shop. You can taste anything, and the staff there are very helpful. Just don't swallow too much if you are tasting, because you still have to drive to the ferry! They are a little more expensive than the supermarkets, but the wine is generally better.

I can't comment on spirits, because the most I might buy is a bottle or two.
