This has been a nightmare to research so any help would be beneficial!!

Not sure exactly how this works but it should enable you to use your three connection as a conventional wireless network. Not 100% though if it works with the USB dongle. Anybdy else know how this works out?

I've routed my PS3 network traffic through my laptop and then onto the internet before. It took a bit of work, but wireless broadband solutions are really a bad way to go about online gaming....you'll get cut off a lot in any of the main online games - as they need fast connections.

I can give you some tips on how to set it up if you want, but it will take a solid evening to get it all working and tested properly - and even then the game servers will more than likely just kick you off for being too slow.

I strongly reccommend you to wait until you have a different broadband setup (DSL/Cable). And just in case you are looking into getting a different broadband setup, never get Irish Broadband - they block playstation games.

    Hope this helps,

Right I actually did this today. Im using vodafone and I hadnt even bothered trying it because I didnt think it would work. Well it did work and Id say its playable at best. Connection interupted comes up every few minutes but other than that its pretty smooth.

You need a crossover ethernet cable from you pc to ps3. Im not sure if a one way cable will work I havent tried it.

Open network connections and right click your 3 modem connection and go to properties, advanced and select sharing enabled. check the LAN connection is enabled too ( should be underneath your 3 modem connection in network connections) reboot your ps3 and run through network setup on your ps3. you might have to try connect 1 or 2 times before you get going.
    Hope this helps

P.s You wont be able to play until after 10 tonight

any network cable should do just fine...the days of needing crossovers are long gone..The PS3 will automatically cross the wires if needs be.

    Hi Guys,

I have tried this and something doesn't seem to be right. I am using a 3g modem and windows vista. When i enable ICS(Sharing) on the USB modem which is classed as a (Dial Up Connection) in Vista and then try and enable the LAN connection underneath, it disconnects the ICS or Sharing on the 3g Modem???!! Any suggestions?? Oh and i'm using a crossover cable.
I don't think it will be a connection issue as last night i was receiving anything up as far as 3mb on the 3G modem.
    Thanks a again guys!

You probably tried this already but Ill throw it out there. Have you tried only plugging in the ethernet when the ps2 is powered on?

joegl: Sorry, I've never used vista - can't help with that.

As long as one end of the network cable is Gigabit ethernet, it will automatically cross if necessary. If you're using vista I guess your laptop is new enough and probably has gb ethernet.

Getting "3mb" doesn't really mean much for online games - it's latency that counts...i.e. the time it takes for your ps2 to send a signal to the game servers and the time for the response to get back to you. A proper broadband connection will do it in 15-30ms, a think the 3 modem will take about 200+ms. For some games this delay will be ok, but for fast games, like pro evo or fifa, you'll kick off, and then your screen will freeze for a second, and then it will tell you your opponent scored. - You wont even see the game being played. I'm unsure how fast the 3 modem is, but I *think* i heard somewhere that it's around that speed.

If you search around for network connection sharing and vista you will probably find the details you need...The fact that your connecting a PS2 won't affect it - it uses standard networking protocols. Also, the PS2 internet ports match the ports that the PS3 needs.

Try setting static ip addresses before sharing the connections....i.e. set your PC to have an IP of "192.168.1.2", and set the PS2 to have "192.168.1.3". After doing this, you pc should show that the network connection is working...after you got that done then try to share the connection.

Let us know how you get on,

Also your computers firewall could block your ps3, I have Mcaffe which blocked it.
