Because they don't serve men. I had money, there was a Beautican available, but her boss had instructed her not to serve men. I felt discriminated against and told her.

    What do others think?.

    Thanks

    well you were discriminated against.

Of course, she may not have training in 'male' shapes, so it may be for the best

    :eek::eek:
all the same, u'd think she would have just "trimmed" them a little in the middle and above the eye just to clean them up a bit!
go and complain to the manager!

My eyebrows are thick and bushy, usually have them waxed every six weeks or so. I use Beauty Salons all the time. Never before refused service albeit I have detected occasional uncomfortable vibes from the odd Therapist..by that I mean some discomfort with the prescence of men in traditonaly female environments...But most are lovely...I pay the same money that others do and am a very non-demanding client....I'm a man...I didn't choose to be....and probably wouldn't if I had the choice....but hell I am....and I felt aggrieved.

    Is such practice legal?.

probably not legal.. but they go on the thought that its not worth the money you would spend on sueing them!
and if you made them do your eyebrows.. they could do them badly "accidentally"

Don't know if it's legal or not.

After today's experience and you mention that some of the girls are uncomfortable doing treatments for a man would you consider staying loyal to 1 or 2 salons where you had a good experience.

Blue Eriu in Dublin have loads of male clients, they do back waxing etc.

And I must compliment you for getting your eyebrows done, I like men who take care of their appearance.

I usualy do stay loyal to one or two....actualy almost everywhere is fine. I just happened to be on a day trip in Cork today and had time on my hands.

The idle Beauty Therapsiy said the she would 'like to serve' me but couldn't because 'we don't serve me' , ' the owner made that rule' , 'don't blame me' ,'we don't serve men' .

Apparently we are in a recession, but some Beauty Therapists with time on their hands don't need money.

Ring up and ask to speak with the manager/owner before going any further imo.

This like illegal or something. HELLO! you can't just refuse people eyebrow waxes otherwise we could become a nation of unibrows. Gross. I would like totally freak out if I was refused an eyebrow wax. It must have been so embarrassing and then walking around with misshapen eyebrows for the day ICK! you have to complain cos it will only happen to other people if you dont.

I completely agree, that is terrible!! you'd think if they had a therapist free that they would appreciate the money, especially if you were to tip her!

Aren't these places exempt from charges of discrimination?
I recall reading n article about this. Anything body-related can make people feel awkward if unisex, so they are free to specify their client base as women only, men only or both.

Ah to be fair now, speaking as a Therapist myself, you have to work on all sorts of people and see all sorts of things you don't want to. That's ridiculous, I can maybe understand if they wouldn't do back, sack and crack if they weren't trained in it but not eyebrow waxing

Mmm. As a woman, I'm not going to go into a barber's and demand a haircut, though.

Proprietors do have the right to choose their clientèle, within limits of course.

Of course I understand that yes.. i wonder if the place in question has a website and we can see if they normally wax men or have mens massage treatments... odd

Did they say they wouldn't serve you because you're a man, or did they say that they wouldn't have the necessary training or ability to deal with mens hair? If they refused, simply based on you being a man, then that's a fairly straight forward sexual discrimination case. If they said it's because they're not trained in dealing with men, then that could be a valid reason.

neuro-praxis made a point about a woman not going into a men's barbers for a hair cut, which is probably true. But if a woman wanted to have all her hair shaved off, then would a men's barber refuse? If she was looking for highlights or something he couldn't provide, then certainly. But if it's the same thing as when dealing with men, then why not? Refusal would be discrimination.

    Like, totally. For sure!

Hi again. There was no reference to not having the necessary training or skill to treat a man. It was simply ''you are a man and the owner has designated that we do not serve men''. I think I'll send them a letter tommorrow maybe.

It was a Cork City Centre Salon, which I cannot name for fear of libel or censor...

Actualy had my eyebrows shaped today in a Limerick City Salon, now greatly reduced in size and look much better. There was no objections to my custom, I paid common currency, I was polite and the job was virtualy indistinguishable from that of a female client...except for the fact that male eyebrows tend to be bushier!....Then again my Mum's are similar to mine...some women have thick eyebrows too.

    Thanks to all

You might want to contact the Equality Authority too, just to check the official stance on it.
